August 13, 201312 yr On the Canadian side, captains at Kenn Borek can make $60-70,000+ for a King Air (at least the last time I saw numbers posted), and I'm assuming more for the Twin Otters. They do require an ATPL and are a little bigger than the typical bush flying outfit though. The smaller operators, where new pilots typically start out, pay less. Not necessarily bad for a new pilot in their early 20s with no family, but you won't be eating out very often. As for lifestyle, this is something one doesn't see any of in a sim. Someone has to load the plane when the mosquitoes are trying to drain you dry in the summer, or when it's -20C in the winter. Guess who gets to do this, especially in the smaller outfits? And many of the communities one can be based in aren't very big, with little to do when not flying. I've talked to some pilots who really liked the work and lifestyle, it can be one heck of an adventure, and then there are those who simply can't stand it.
