Is there an advantage in upgrading to a USB joystick?

Featured Replies

I still have my Saitek Cyborg plugged onto the audio card. Will I see any improvements in FS2004, if I upgrade to an USB joystick? Thanks, Wolfgang

Yes easier calibration :).And some increased precision. It depends of course from what joystick you are going from and which you are going to.But I am sure you can fly well the Saitek Cyborg stick (old version) still is an excellent joystick. I weared mine out a long time ago though. But when you want to upgrade you don

I'm worried that gameport hardware will become completely unusable in the next generation or two of computers. Of course, a few generations beyond that your USB equipment will meet a similar fate. When I bought my last machine two and a half years ago, I went to plug in my CH yoke and pedals, only to discover there was no gameport jack. For this machine, I was able to install a sound card with a gameport, but how long will it be before that option is no longer supported? As a Scotsman and a New Englander, I hate the thought of throwing out something that's still working flawlessly, but I'm not sure I'll be able to use my controls after the next upgrade. So, I'm kind of resigned to replacing that stuff, too.My guess is, joystick buyers will mostly go wireless the next time around. That's something else you won't see with gameports, ever.

For me, the biggest benefit of using a USB joystick is the ability to "hot swap" my joystick and my wheel and pedals. No calibration, no setting changes needed, just unplug one and plug in the other and go.Jim

Although there was some connectivity there, I could not get response from the full set of axes and switches on the CH Yoke. I sent some e-mail to CH, who said that the analog gameport stuff doesn't fully map to USB, so that solution is only partly valid. Some posts here have claimed that they got that to work, but I was unable to use that solution.

But really you don
