External Hosting Sites - AVSIM's rules on these?

Featured Replies

Hi,

This is not a challenge or a complaint or a strop, just a genuine query;   Regarding Tom's thread in the 777 screenshot comp section, regarding "Disqualifications", a number of screenshots were disqualified, where the reason given is simply the name of the hosting site.

Eg... My screenshot was disqualified because it was hosted at servimg.com, Rich Sennett's pic and a few others were disqualified because they were hosted at tinypic.com.

I didn't know that certain hosting sites were not allowed here at AVSIM, and I've just trawled the rules for the screenshots forum and cannot find any reference to a list of 'banned' hosting sites?

Could you possible link to where these are shown?

I don't want to break rules at AVSIM, that's one aspect, but also, as I am sure you can imagine I, (and I'm sure the other guys) put a lot of thought into our 777 screenies, and it's a little dis-spiriting to have been disqualified for a reason that I can't see written anywhere in the screenshot rules?

I'm sure I'm just being blind and have missed where this rule on external hosting is shown - would greatly appreciate a link to it?

Thanks.

EDIT:  Ah, I've received a PM from a buddy on here who tells me the rules were in one of the yellow 'caution boxes' above the forum section.   I don't get to see these those on my mobile device (I do on my desktop and laptop) so didn't catch this particular rule where on this occasion (unlike with normal screenshots posted), all screenshots had to be uploaded to AVSIM, and not hosted externally.

So fair enough I guess.

(Ironically I always post externally because I thought it saved AVSIM bandwidth..)

Hi Dave,

I've tried to respond several times, but I think my email notifications have been screwed up.  Anyhow, yes ... the rules are clearly written in the yellow block above the forum.  I don't think we considered mobile users ... that will be a consideration for the next contest.

We (I) heartily recommend using third party hosting sites.  There are no sites restricted as far as I am aware of.  However, for this contest, we needed all images hosted on AVSIM servers.  I'm sure this is for copyright issues.  We cannot claim copyright for images hosted on a third party server.

Keep using the third party servers !!

The next contest we will do things a little different, I'm sure.  It was very disheartening disqualifying many of these fabulous images.

Hope this clears things up a little,

Dennis

Ah of course, that totally makes sense regarding the copyright Dennis.  I knew there'd be a reason why for the competition, all images had to be uploaded.

Many thanks for the reply and thanks for taking the time to explain!

Cheers,

Dave.
