September 18, 201312 yr I wanted to know which climb mode is more realistic for use during step climbs. V/S or VNAV? I find VNAV too abrupt at the beginning/end of climb, especially with a hot rod like the 777. And I'm not talking about a lightly loaded aircraft, I'm talking a 15 hour trip fully loaded. I have read that some simmers/real pilots dial in v/s to avoid disturbing passengers, and others just punch in the new altitude and press the altitude knob to initiate the climb in VNAV. Yes, I know that passengers won't really feel high climb or descent rates, but it's the transition from level flight to a high rate of altitude change that can be unpleasant for some. In the NGX I always used VNAV, as for some reason I didn't find the climbs too sudden. But I do notice it in the 777, not sure if the real bird is like this or not. May someone please advise? A.J.
