Best Terrain Mesh for UK

Featured Replies

AllIn the Downloads section there are a number of different terrain mesh files for the Uk.Which is the best, or what are the differences between them.Phil 8-)

Hi Phil,I'm not entirely sure about free UK meshes, but I would hazard a guess that FSGenesis would be the way to go. Is anyone else using this?Personally, I'm using the payware VFR Terrain mesh from Visual Flight. No other mesh (for any country) comes close to this one! :-cool Paul

Most freeware meshes (and some payware ones) are based off the SRTM 90m data so they are essentially identical. VFR Terrain however is based off 5m source data (18 times the resolution of SRTM).

"VFR Terrain mesh from Visual Flight. No other mesh (for any country) comes close to this one!"......Yes, Paul, I agree. What's more the mesh extends into southern Scotland. So, if you have FSGenesis's UK mesh installed as well, you have the best of both worlds with full coverage.Mike

If you are only after a freeware mesh then JimmiG is right - the SRTM based meshes are the ones to look at. They all use the same data but there are slight variations owing to the manner in which they have been resampled. I've looked at them all (Denney, Genesis, Mauri etc) and all are perfectly good. Genesis seems to have slightly crisper cliffs but you would only notice this very close up.The advantage of most SRTM meshes is that they covers the whole British Isles. As a special treat I'd suggest looking at the England/Wales VFR Terrain mesh package as the resolution is far more stunning (yes you can have two meshes active). This VFR package also provides much more than its name suggests - like a very accurate England/Wales coastline to replace the rough default version.boneshttp://fsaviation.nethttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/ng_driver.jpg
