December 1, 200421 yr Hello simmer friends :)I've just been bitten by the SDB (scenery-download bug) and I have three questions for you gurus on here.1.I understand what a "mesh" is but on some scenery websites they are talking about "landclass" and I dont understand what that means :(2.How does the scenery order-menu work? Am I right in stating that to use your newly downloaded scenery you should simply make sure its sitting *above* the default FS9 scenery area in the list? (For example if you downloaded some high-res UK terrain mesh you just place it above Western Europe)3.Finally a website had this to say concerning scenery http://www.nextgenerationrecords.co.uk/boa...es/icon_eek.gif --------------------------------------------------------------------"FS2004 rules for mesh with the same LOD:* Mesh in the folder/layer having the LOWER Priority in the Scenery Library will be used. (Unlike scenery, where the HIGHER Priority folder is still given precedence)"--------------------------------------------------------------------If someone can put that in newbie-friendly language I would be very grateful!!!!Can u help!Thanx :)
December 1, 200421 yr I'll try to help.1. Mesh gives you the topography, landclass defines what is planted or built on top. Landclass tells the sim what textures (city, suburban, farm field, forest, etc.) to display where.2. I'm not avid scenery downloader but the additions that I've made, I just added as I acquired them and let them assume the default level. So far in FS9, that has worked for me. In previous versions, I've had a few problems that required that I reorder the priorities. These were usually explained in the readme file so I always check there to see if there are instructions. On a few occasions, I had to experiment until something worked to my liking.3. I have no idea whether that is important or not. I'd say just go for it; download what interest you and install it. Check the readme and most likely what you do will work. If not, delete it and go get some more!R-

Yea I've been folllowing the readmes and had no probs so far....but I fly in the default scener first and then take a screenshot. I then fly in the identical area after the new mesh is installed & compare it with the screenshot to make sure!
December 2, 200421 yr Read http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...ing_type=searchas a reference.Generally speaking, mesh with a higher LOD takes precedence over such with lower LOD. FS9 default mesh has a very low LOD, so almost any add-on mesh (usually starting from LOD9 upwards) has higher resolution and therefore has priority no matter where you place it in the scenery layers. The rules you describe are mostly for conflights, i.e. when overlapping mesh with the same LOD is installed. For this, the above article gives more details (file names are important here, too).Scenery is a little different, higher level=higher priority. So, place mesh and scenery in different folders and sort them accordingly in scenery.cfg.I suppose landclass plays another role here: read the installation instructions of FSG Hawaii, where some files in the default FS9 Scenery folder need to be renamed and some files need to be copied to. If you don't do that, scenery looks different (not the mesh, but more the landclass). So, I assume it's the landclass which follows different rules (lower order in scenery.cfg (=higher number) takes precedence?).Wish that in future FS versions, this could be re-worked and made easier. In the end, I guess no one can really know if mesh and scenery together with landclass is 100% properly installed without juggling them in scenery.cfg and taking before/after screenshots. As I stated above, I already had my surprises...But in most cases, it's not a problem at all.Andreas Andreas, LOWW - Nihil sumus et fuimus mortales. December 2, 200421 yr Thanks Andreas. That link will come in handy, I need to print that. Its going to take some juggling before I figure out how to fiddle with the scenry.cfg and all that! So far I've just been adding meshes and then using the "add scenery" button.I dont know about everyone else on here but on my computer once you climb past 6000 feet you cant make out any details on the landscape, I've got all sliders at 100% (except clouds). Down low its awesome!Needless to say I've found the jet airliners suddenly taking a back seat as I trundle around in Otters, Caravans & Dash-7s!
December 3, 200421 yr Something else about the landclass. The landclass is a number which specifies a set of texture bitmaps for an approx 1 km square area. The bitmaps are designed to be localized (fields look different in the US compared to Africa) and to provide seasonal and nightime variations. To prevent a checkerboard appearance that would occur if the same bitmap were repeated over and over, 4 adjoining bitmaps are actually blended together to create the final texture that is drawn over the mesh. These bitmaps are also annotated to include building and vegetation 3d autogen objects, so a landclass of "conifer forest" would have pine tree objects.FS9 provides a default file with landclass values for the entire earth. Downloaded scenery may contain files which replace the landclass values within a region. The scenery priority within the library determines which one is used (highest number scenery area will overwrite lower numbered ones assuming they cover the same lat/long).An alternative to using the standard texture set is to use "photo real" textures. Of course, any specific texture bitmap file could be replaced as long as it has the correct format.scott s..
December 3, 200421 yr By "scenery priority" do you mean the window in FS9 where you have to use the Move Up & Move Down buttons on scenery you have just added?
