Frozen FMC

Featured Replies

Though I would ask here to see if anybody else had seen this.

I set up the plane at Dubai and took off from runway 12L. I had a flight plan to climb to FL310 and then later a step climb to FL350. I use VoxATC which takes it's route direct from FSX flight plan, which unbeknown to me had set the flight level at 350, so as I climbed ATC told me to climb to FL330. I rolled the altitude to 330, press the knob and then went to check the FMC's, both of which was frozen. I could not change the page although the buttons still clicked and everything else worked fine, the aircraft still climbed but I could not do anything on the FMC's.

Did you, perhaps, cycle views at any point using the 'S' key?  If so, you may have stepped through tower view without realizing it.  If FSX can't find a tower within a certain range, it freaks out (generic FSX bug) and gauges can stop updating in general.  Switching through VC views using the 'A' key generally tends to solve the issue.  To avoid this issue in the future, use right clicks to switch views.

For what it's worth, I'd avoid any default FSX flight planning functions like the plague.  If you must use it, I would have it load a route from an external source (like going to SimRoutes, generating a default FSX route file, and loading that once in FSX).  It would be a shame to miss out on the realism of the plane to bend it to the unrealistic demands of the FSX planner (and to be honest, VoxATC, but people have their reasons for using those types of add-ons, so I won't stick my nose there).

Thanks Kyle but I don't use 'A' or 'S' to change views as they are disabled because I have EZDok. The gauges was updating and everything was working fine apart from the frozen FMC's.

As regards to planning, the route came from Vataware and then run through FSBuild with AS2012 for weather. Rex then installed the textures. With regards to VoxATC, I don't want to go online and use Vatsim or the like, I have my own reasons for that, however I have had Radar Contact which had no SIDS or STARS, Proflight Emulator which had SIDS and STARS but you had to set them up yourself and had other limits. Both of which are button based. With VoxATC, although not perfect, allocates SIDS and STARS dependant on runways in use, goes gate to gate including runway crossing holds, controls AI traffic so you don't end up on opposite ends of the runway and is voice controlled which runs nice next to things like FS2Crew. If you have never tried it and like ATC I highly recommend it. You can also set it up for vectors to runway if needed, alternate airports, holds enroute and route variations for traffic and weather.

hmm...don't know what else could cause that...

That's good to hear.  The way you'd written it, it seemed like you were letting FSX do it all for you.

Thus why I said " but people have their reasons for using those types of add-ons, so I won't stick my nose there."

I'm sure it works for some people, but not for me.  As someone who flies real world, regularly, I see all too often that ATC is very dynamic, and there's no good way to capture that in a program.  Additionally, the programs I've seen haven't implemented localized procedures, so I wouldn't be getting what I get in the real world, either.  So, for me, it's a human, using real world SOPs, or nothing (and me following what I know of real world facilitiy SOPs).  Granted, my jobs offer me a lot more visibility into that sort of thing, so my situation is pretty unique.

Thanks Oliver. Missed that one and thought it was something to do with trying to climb higher then the set flight level. Think the 777 might have to be hangered until the update come out.

Kyle, I totally agree. I have not found an addon yet that is 100% realistic , but I must say, for me who has only been a passenger in an aircraft enjoying the duty free, I find this the most realistic. It annoys the wife so much me having to talk to my PC for a while so I have to let my virtual co-pilot do the comms for most of the flight which I cant do with Vatsim.
