FSX DX9 Bloom - Handled by CPU or GPU?

Featured Replies

I was using the DX10 fixer but I've switched back to DX9 because the fixer didn't like PMDG very much.  Very stuttery in DX10 but smooth in DX9.

I really like FSX built-in bloom but it kills my fps in DX9.

I'm wondering if the bloom is handled by the CPU or GPU?

If it's GPU, can anyone recommend an Nvidia card that will let me keep my current fps with bloom enabled?  I'd prefer an efficient card because I think my power supply is only 550w.  It's a Modu 82+.

Any help greatly appreciated.

If you're having FPS issues with PMDG aircraft, it might be your configuration files or system hardware. I fly the 777 in DX10 and it works great. I have a GTX 670 4 GB card.

Bloom (DX9) or HDR (DX10) is usually handled by the GPU, both in FSX or any software I've used. If it was tied to the CPU, then setting it to DX9 or DX10 wouldn't make a difference.

Thanks Jeff.  Not sure what's causing it.  I tried it with my tweaked cfg and default cfg and get less fps in DX10 with the NGX than DX9.  I don't have the 777 yet.

I don't think anybody knows what's causing it.  There were a handful of people reporting lower than normal fps using PMDG with the DX10 fixer when it came out.

I've also decided to return to DX9 because of ENB and to ensure 100% compatibility with all my aircraft and scenery add ons.

With your GTX670, are you able to run DX9 bloom without fps loss?

Thanks

I haven't flown DX9 in a while, but I could check it out. It may even be the way DX9 renders bloom, and not necessarily the actual card. Something similar was said about water shaders. That DX10 provides better performance with those than DX9 does.

I agree.  I think it may be the way DX9 is rendering bloom and water.

In DX10, bloom doesn't affect my fps at all.  Water, just a little compared to DX9.

I plan to upgrade to a beast machine in a few years.  Hopefully I'll be able to run bloom in DX9 by then.
