Inserting DME Arc

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if someone could tell me how to insert a DME arc into the FMC. I know how to do it in the PMDG MD11 and 737 but cannot figure out how to in the LVD 767. For example, I am flying into Dublin from the west and do a 19nm DME arc, don't you normally type in DUB/292/19 ?

Appreciate the help!

You have to do it via the FIX page. Say we want to install the approach starting at GARSA. The arc to fly is a 17 DME RDD Arc from radial 028 to radial 348.

What you do, is you go to FIX and enter the RDD VOR on which you want to center the arc (cool thing is, it doesn't necessarily have to be a VOR, you can do this with any fix). On your EHSI you'll see Redding VOR appearing as a green symbol.

Now on the first BRG/DST line, you input "028/17", which is the entry point to the arc. On the EHSI you'll see a green dashed 17 DME arc and the 028 radial. On the second line of the FIX page you input the exit point of the arc which is "348/17".

Having entered those brg/dst points, you select the first one, got to LEGS page and insert it where necessary. Go back to FIX, select the second one, go to LEGS and insert it below the previous fix.

Now you'll have your arc set up as a single straigt line between the entry and exit point. What you want now is to enter more "brg/dst" points to make your magenta line look more like an actual arc. It's good enough to have an arc point every 10 or 15 radials (depending on how far from the station the arc is). You may want to introduce "018/17", "008/17" and "358/17", that will give you a good enough arc.

As you see, introducing an arc is not done automatically by the FMC. That's not a big deal since you'll seldom have to do it yourself because most of the times these arcs are already installed into the SID/STAR or approaches.
