artificial horizon issue

Featured Replies

New user so forgive me if this subject has been covered before. When flying a g1000 equiped aircraft and you place the attitude indicator on the shown horizon and hold it there results in a decent, not level flight. What am i doing wrong? Thanks. Steve

Attitude and flightpath are not the same thing.

The former is where the plane is pointed, the latter is where it is going.

The difference between the two is the angle of attack (AOA) and this varies with airspeed, altitude, weight, Gload and flapsetting.

If you point the nose at the horizon and there is a positive AOA then the flightpath will be pointing below the horizon, ie a descent.

To maintain altitude you look at the altimeter and vertical speed indicator.

You can then use the attitude indicator to adjust the attitude as necessary.

There is no specific attitude to fly at, whatever attitude gives you your desired flightpath is the right attitude.
