Advice for a new convert

Hi Everyone,

Well after much fiddling I think I have finally got DX10 going the way I want it.

I fly tubes to big payware airports with real weather...plane is aerosoft airbus.

Now I had a stutter show and with cloud unflyable  until I tried BP=8m and RT =256. BP=0 was a no go, this caused the issue I think the card looked like it was not doing much work most of the time then shot right up then down again and this is running with a gtx 770! and OC I 72600 @4.5

Strange I thought the other way being better for FSX.

So what I have now is occasional black flashing not sure if it is clouds or scenery, can I apply the swarmcloud fix here with DX10?

Also when I switch from spot to cockpit everything is black then reverts to normal?

And high should water be?

I am running x4 AA in the fixer and 4SGSS in NI LOD is set at -1.00 and using 1/2 frame rate Have I missed anything.

Any advice gladly excepted.

Many thanks

All the best

4.5 is well balanced for a 770 - therefore Buffers could be "UsePools=0" or UsePools=1, with an RT.

You don't need to specify 8MB, as this is the default. Great exercise!

Your sig still shows a 570.

Strange I thought the other way being better for FSX.  Not strange, Mark!

My 4.9 gig with a 580 = UsePools=1, RT 512k, and 4.9 gig with a 780 = "UsePools=0"

So what I have now is occasional black flashing not sure if it is clouds or scenery, can I apply the swarmcloud fix here with DX10?  <<<--- No - that is a DX9 file only.

Also when I switch from spot to cockpit everything is black then reverts to normal? Pretty normal for DX10 or DX9. Try SWAP_WAIT_TIMEOUT= 3, and then moving up or down one or two - even removing this may fix it (assuming you have it in already). FFTF will also affect this, 4096 textures will, too much traffic will, missing Alphas - anything which will add load and has to be repainted in one big shot.

And how high should water be? <<<<----4 or 5

I am running x4 AA in the fixer and 4SGSS in NI LOD is set at -1.00 and using 1/2 frame rate  Good - could be -0.75 too. Whichever works - I've seen both quoted in technical papers as "use this".

Nice to see some good experimenting, Mark. Good post, and I hope this helps you.

All the best,

pj

Hi Paul,

Thank you so much for the advice much appreciated.

I will make some further adjustments and try have not included the SWT so will give that a try FFTF s at 05

Had very poor performance yesterday with rain clouds and the airbus at a payware airport but today since the BP changes it is on a par with DX9.

All I need to do now is work out how to get VC shadows in the airbus cockpit.

Thank you Paul

All the best

Mark

FFTF at 0.05 is too low, Mark - you need a very fast GPU for this. This figure is a ratio, and permits more - or less time to scenery loading. At .05 you are allowing almost no time to load scenery.

A 770 isn't the fastest card around, and - as you haven't included your hardware specs in your profile......  :O OOOPS!! -  we have no idea what your monitor(s) is/are!! Your config and eventual frame rate depend upon the one component that almost nobody mentions!

Airbus VC Shadows... DX10 Controller General Shader - top, center.

All the best,

pj

Thank you Paul,

Sorry mean to update the profile but running a i7 2600 @ 4.5 and as you know a gtx 770 surprised this can not handle the low FFTF! For the money it cost I thought it was a good top end card.

I will of course turn the FFTF down to about 15 a more conservative number I think.

The monitor is well not the best a 24inch Acer and runs at 60 he but I agree it is not the best would not have a clue which to get these days.

Will update the profile today once again thank you for your time and assistance.

Kind regards

Mark

"Runs at 60"?

Would you mind copy/pasting your fsx.cfg, Mark, renaming the copy as "Mark_fsx.txt", and then attach it to a reply by using the "More Reply Options" window (bottom - right corner). This will allow you to browse for the .txt file, and include it as an attachment. Please - do it this way, rather than pasting the whole thing into the reply window. Thanks,

pj

Hi Paul,

Attached as requested, did try BP=1 but went back to the setting you see it was better? also moved FFTF back as again better suited my system.

I have been adjusting a few things in Steve's Fixer not sure if I should disable the cloud shader entirely I have left out MSAA and cull is ticked.

Still running on 4x in the fixer and 4 SGSS in NI would like to go to 8 but will have to test how she runs...

Monitor runs at 60 hz is what I meant to say!

With kind regards

Mark

Mark_fsx.txt

Hi Mark - just opened your config: take a good read of the BufferPools doc linked to my sig below, then look at your entry in the cfg...

When you edit almost any of the config files in your user FSX folder - especially the .xml files - you must make sure that your syntax is exactly correct, otherwise your sim may not start at all!

Back in a while,

pj

Edit: - by the way - your processor... is it a plain 2600, as you said in the top post, or is it a 2600K?

OK - Here you go.

Flaps15_Mark_fsx_chgd.txt

just drop it in and rename it. Your original is saved.

Let us know how you make out.

All the Best,

pj

Hi Paul,

Many thanks I will give the new file a bash tomorrow when I get home from work.

Have updated the profile and yes it is a 2600k.

Will report back with my findings thank you for taking the time out to do this...you must be a very busy guy! When on earth do you get time to fly!

With thanks

Mark

[bufferPools]

UsePools=1

RejrctThreshold=524288

Hey Paul, I had a quick look at the file and unfortunately reject threshold is spelled incorrectly and needs to be edited before use :)

No way!!! I checked it 25 times!!   Imposseeebla!  I NEVER make mistakes!!

:LMAO:

OK, OK - It was a test, to see who was on the ball!! B)

Hi Paul,

Yes I noticed the typo too!!!! hey but not as bad as my effort!!! what a stinker!!!

Anyway did change the config over and tried it....um have to say not much difference at all maybe a couple of frames here and there..

I will keep adjusting until I find a sweet spot for the rig....

Just wanted to ask though as a post above mentions, what is the penalty for not including the cloud shader? will it visually make a difference and more importantly any performance  gain....I rather keep it in as part of the package.

Again thanks for the time you have given me in getting off the ground!!!

All the best

Mark

Page 39 of the manual. If you're using SGSS the "Disable MSAA" won't work.

I don't know what you expected, Mark, but I didn't expect magic from the changes - I've merely optimized the config so that it reflects realistic settings. I didn't test the RejectThreshold setting, nor TBM, not FFTF - only you can do that. I didn't look at Inspector, nor your PC.

The one thing that will fix your problem, though - what it needs, Mark - is to be overclocked.

The 2600K is masterful at 4.8 or 9! Doing that will fix 90% of your issues.

Saying "I will keep adjusting until I find a sweet spot for the rig...." is a never-ending career! You won't find a sweet spot, as finding a performance peak requires much more than tweaking the cfg here and there. To get much better, you need to understand the Inspector settings -  all that we use: you must also include the operating system, memory timings, processes, services, etc.. I'm not saying follow the "How-To" guide, but it's had the input from lots of experimentation by many DX10 flyers, and so forms a great base for an FSX-DX10 pc, and provides beneficial direction for the project.  but above all.. you're running at 4.5 gig. You should be at 4.8 or 9. 5 gig is bliss.

Thank you Paul.

I will start with looking at the oc see what I can do and go from there..

Cheers!
