Upgrading My CPU

Featured Replies

Hi there  Currently, I've been getting more addons for my sim, and it seems that I need to start squeezing out more power from my rig. I've been thinking of getting a new CPU, and a better cooling system for OCing. This is what I currently have: http://ark.intel.com/products/65509/Intel-Core-i5-3330-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_20-GHz

I've been looking at this for a while now: http://ark.intel.com/products/75049/Intel-Core-i5-4670S-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_80-GHz and some of the i7s.

Would be great if any of you could point me in the right direction.  ^_^ I'm kind of a newbie when it comes to hardware and all. Thanks for any input.

READ THE MANUALS.

If you are going to overclock, you want a K-series processor (e.g. the i7-4770K) and not the power-saving S-series that you linked. K-series CPUs have unlocked multipliers and are meant for overclocking.   Also (perhaps you know this) you are going to need a new motherboard if you want to upgrade to a 4th-gen (Haswell) processor from your current 3rd Gen.  You'll want to look for a Z87 (chipset) motherboard (socket LGA 1150).

I just built a new system with the i7-4770K, the Corsair H100i closed-loop CPU water cooler, and an ASUS Z87-Plus motherboard.  Your budget and feature needs will dictate what parts you will need (e.g. do you want on-board WiFi on your motherboard, etc), but I am happy with my combo.

If you have any further questions or info to provide, perhaps we can help you narrow things down.
