Two graphics card problem

Featured Replies

Hi, on my noteboook I have two grahics cards - Intel and Nvidia. For a long time I didn't have problems with them but suddenly - without any driver instalation - Nvidia had dissapear in the display settings. So now I need to run FSX on the weak Intel hd graphics with far less FPS. I've tried deleting fsg.cfg as well as total reinstalling of FSX including registry cleaning. Reinstall helped: I could see Nvidia in defaullt version without addons. But when I try to install some addons, it goes bad. Any ideas?

Hi! Welcome to AVSIM! Your first post here and you have to post the hardest question to answer! :P  Your laptop/notebook has the integrated Intel HD graphics and a dedicated Nvidia video card but they cannot function at the same time. When running basic applications or maybe surfing on the Internet, your notebook doesn't need a powerful GPU so the integrated Intel HD GPU takes over. That's the default for laptops/notebooks. They do this to save battery power. If you plug in your charger, it should see that you do not need the integrated graphics to save power and switch over to the more powerful GPU. So, I would not be concerned as to what your fsx.cfg is showing as your display as FSX will look at your system and load whatever it sees as appropriate at the time you start up FSX (that's the concept anyway). So, I think it is important to make sure your GPU is plugged in when you start up FSX. This will tell your notebook that it can use the more powerful Nvidia GPU instead of the Intel HD graphics to save power.

I searched the Internet and also found that you might be able to go into your BIOS and make the Nvidia card the dedicated GPU no matter what the power source (some manufacturers have removed this option though from their notebooks).  They say that if FSX did not switch to the dedicated GPU, you should access your BIOS and set the graphics to Static instead of Dynamic. Then select the dedicated GPU so that it will always be used.

Perhaps one of our members who own a notebook/laptop can provide exact details on how to enter the BIOS for your notebook or you can check the manual that came with the notebook. For our members to be able to help you though, you would need to let us know what notebook you are using.

May I suggest you provide your system specs by completing the My PC section of your AVSIM Profile.  As you can see in the sidebar, I have my system specs listed under My PC.  You can get there by clicking on your username in the upper right corner and selecting your profile.

Hope this helps.

Try to restore your BIOS settings to factory. This solved this sort of exact issue with Nvidia dual Intel dissappearing twice.

If you are using Acceleration you can disregard this reply.  If you have Deluxe or Standard FSX then make sure You have SP1 and SP2 installed so your sim can see and maintain the NVidia Graphics card while you install your addons.

Thank you all guys for quick answers. I'm running FSX on Lenovo Z580 (i5 version). Have the basic version + acceleration pack.  In Win7 you can choose preffered graphics card for each .exe however although I've set Nvidia as default to use for FSX it does not help. Other applications are using Nvidia without any problem so I'm thinking about the BIOS settings as firehawk44 wrote.
