New PC Build For FSX

Featured Replies

Hello everyone here...

As i started with fsx with a cheap pc after i switch from fs9..now it become the time to build a new fsx pc..i was thinking into haswell and the new maxwell gpu's..

Specs:

i5 4670k (think to oc to 4.4ghz)

Msi z87-gd55

G.skill 8gb ddr3 1600mhz

Geforce gtx 750 ti 2gb

1tb hdd

Asus dvd burner

Corsair cx 750m

Nzxt 220

My monitor will be an viewsonic 22inch 1920x1080p via dvi

I want to run pmdg 737 & 777 at 20-25+ fps

Wait about a moth and get a 4690K once its available.

Same price, but will be much better to over clock!

I would personally go with a GTX 760 as a bare minimum, especially if you are buying new and want to be a bit future proof.

Make use of a decent CPU cooler if you want to OC

I use the core i5 4670k @4.4 and it runs very wel!
PMDG NGX @ EBBR - aboud 25-30 frames

Consider building your next box to work best for all current simulator offerings.  I did, and it's worked out very well.  You may spend more but you'll likely end up w/ something that will likely last you many years.  The pace of development for the desktop has slowed a bit so it can pay to build strong up front.  I'm using Prepar3D V2.x and there is absolutely no going back to FSX--it's just way too compelling in terms of smoothness, complexity, and image quality.   It's a work in progress, and it is progressing at a very robust pace.

I recommend:

  • i7-4930K (hexacore unlocked processor)
  • 16g-32Gb of 2100 to 2400Mhz quad channel ram (XPlane 64-bit can access it, and P3DVx eventually likely will eventually.
  • A 500Gb SATA III SSD.  On it will go your OS & simulator.  You can easily accommodate FSX & P3D, or any combination of 2 different simulators.  You will use this drive ONLY for OS & sims--you won't surf the web from it, nor utilize it for office apps, email, gaming, etc.  This way you can keep the install ultra lean, without any bloatware, no antivirus, etc.
  • Pick up a 2nd cheap SATA 7200 HDD.  On it you will install Win7 or Win8.  You can use the same install disk you used for the SSD.  You will use this to
    • Install all other Windows software you plan to use.  Games, Office, etc
    • Reserve a folder that can be accessed from your OS/Sims SSD boot up that you will download sim-related software to, then install into your sim.  This keeps large downloaded files in storage on a separate HDD, keeping your SSD just for OS & sims going forward.
  • Whatever GPU you grab, don't settle for less than 4Gb of VRAM, hopefully GDDR5 over a 384-bit bus, and one that can be SLI'd.   The newer simulators use these big time--not so for FSX.  I went w/ a 6Gb pricey Titan, which may matter if I go SLI since SLI does not allow you to exploit the VRAM on both cards--just one of the two or more SLD'd cards.
  • Enough of a PSU to cope easily w/ possible SLI.

Again, if you're building only for FSX, then less need for more DRAM, less VRAM, less PSU, and 4 cores is as good as 6 cores, or very close, and all else being equal 4 core would be more overclockable.

The above configuration is pricey but as I say, will last a while and is expandable thru SLI which is finally becoming meaningful for desktop flight simulation.

Good luck!
