How to fix this? - Trees growing on the airport

Featured Replies

http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/kao/otn/pcrying.gifI just downloaded two pieces of add-on scenery; Bangkok Scenery & Chiang Mai Intl' Airport (Bangkok).Loads up fine, airport and surrounding area look perfect, but:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/105537.jpgThe only way to get rid of the trees growing on the airport is to disable "Bangkok Scenery" but when I do that all the parking areas, gates & airbridges on the airport vanish as well :(Has anyone encountered this before? Your guidance would be great! :)Thanks!!

Looks like a problem with the exclude bgl(missing ?)- did you follow the installation instructions exactly? Dave

Hello Dave,Thanx for replying...yea those were my thoughts as well but then I spotted this in the installation notes:"Flatten and exclude switches are not required for any of this scenery, as they are included in the BGL files."Oh well! :( I will just delete this scenery, pity cuz its so good! But seeing a forest at the holding-point is a bit strange!:)

Hello Nevin,That airport is missing its skirting, the grass that underlies the entire airport (and prevents trees from appearing!)If this bgl containing the skirting was not included in the package, then you can either contact the developer - perhaps he just forgot, in the rush to get his scenery out - our you could add it yourself. This is not difficult.Or, probably easier, but it won't look as nice, you can make some exclude files for the runways and the ramps with ExcBuilder by Paavo Pihelgas, in the AvSim library. Very easy, but no grass.Best regards.Luis

Hello Luis,Thanx for the input!<<<....or you could add it yourself. This is not difficult. >>>>That is most interesting and Im very curious now :) If you dont mind could you pleaaaaaaase tell me how to go about this? :)I will also check out the ExcBuilder programme!

Hello Nevin,Without the grass skirting, the underlying land class, and its autogen trees, displays at the airport. By placing a grass skirting (no trees), this problem can be eliminated.Any terrain design program can be used for this. I would use Ground2K4, because it allows drawing the skirting by simply slewing over the airport in Flight Simulator. The whole thing is very easy to do.However, I would hesitate to indicate the process in more detail in this forum. But, perhaps if you posted this question in the Scenery Design forum, I would be happy to give you a step-by-step guide with illustrations.Best regards.Luis

Are you using the 2 sceneries from Martin Strong? If so, you can email him....he provides an address. However, I downloaded both sets of files, installed them and I see no problems at all. Are you using any other scenery for this area? Are you sure you have followed the installation _exactly_ as Martin has spelled out in his doc's? From your photo, it would appear that the exclude files he has provided are not having the desired affect and this is usually attributed to said files being in the wrong scenery area priority. Please ensure that you have created _separate_ directories for Bangkok and Chiang Mai under the main FS Scenery directory and that each has its own Scenery and Texture folders. Also pay particular attention to the Landclass file placement for Chiang Mai.......it goes in its own independant and dedicated Scenery folder.By the way, the two sceneries are independant of one another.... as long as you have followed the above suggestions; in other words, one won't have an effect on the other. Finally, there is no need to create a VTP polygon, as has been suggested, to suppress the autogen trees that you see in your photo.

Luis - Oh okay I shall do that! I thought about posting there but the name of the forum made me think it was for scenery *designers* only so thats why I posted here :)___________________________________________________________GCBarni - Yes Im using Martin's scenery! I printed out the installation instructions and followed them exactly - specially the points you highlighted. The file placement is:[Addon Scenery]||(Bangkok Scenery)-scenery-texture||(Chiang Mai Intl)-scenery-texture||(Landclass)-sceneryWhat did you mean by "priority" :) I dont really understand all that hee hee!

Thanks for posting your file arrangement.....I think this is where you're going wrong.Move each of the directories _away_ from the Addon Scenery Folder/ directory and insert them under the Main FS Scenery Folder/Directory. As long as scenery is under the Addon Scenery folder, the exclude files can not function as designed because their priority is incorrect. In order to work, these files must be _higher_ than the area in which the default files are located and Addon Scenery Folder does _not_ meet this prerequisite.Priority and other scenery terms should be explained in the Help menus.

Thanks for your comments and helpful advice, Garvin. You are, of course, right - there is no need for a grass polygon in order to suppress the autogen trees. A few simple exclude files will do the job quite nicely.Nonetheless, a grass polygon will look much nicer and do the same thing. Look closely at that screenshot, or at Martin's scenery since you seem to have it, and you will see that the ground is, in fact, a forest texture. Unless these two airports are in the middle of a forest and do not have a grass skirting like most major airports, then of course an exclude is fine.Best regards.Luis

Or one could alter the landclass. For my projects, I "remove" the default grass......I think it looks too phony......using Ground2K. I then alter the landclass to make things more suitable. And of course, this is where autogen can become a problem if the landclass texture ultimately employed is of the autogen-supportive type. When this becomes an issue, I use "invisible" runways created with AFW to exclude those bits of autogen not wanted,..... but that's a whole different topic!

Friends :) ....<<<< Move each of the directories _away_ from the Addon SceneryFolder/ directory and insert them under the Main FS SceneryFolder/Directory. >>>>Ok I tried that and *only* the bare-bones Chiang Mai airport appeared (no Bangkok Scenery, no jetways, less buildings etc.)It appears that "Bangkok Scenery" not only adds Bangkok city but *also* adds more buildings to Chiang Mai airport. So I stopped FS9 and then added both folders from C:FS9scenery using the FS9 "Add Area" function (just like I did when the folders were present in the "Addon Scenery" location)...and......the complete airport appeared along with Bangkok Scenery but the trees came back :(Either Im making a silly mistake somewhere or the exclude files are not working - Im sure its the former because you and other users dont seem to be having the trees problem!Im out of ideas! Thank you for trying to help! I will have a look on Martins site to see if there is an FAQ!:)

Update:-------I just downloaded Martin's "Mae Hong Son" airport scenery and it is working perfectly :)It also has built-in exclusion-BGL files which leads me to beleive that the exclude files in the Bangkok Scenery scenery are not functioning for me...for some wierd reason!I also wanted to clarify that it is the *Bangkok Scenery* that is causing the trees to appear - not Chiang Mai airport.Waaa!:)

I wasn't able to get back here before now, but yesterday I did some experimenting by moving and adding the *.bgl files one at a time; and using BGLAnalyzer, here's what I discovered:AVBDXXX.bgl lays down the revised texture which is responsible for the "new" look to the airport property, including additional autogen buildings and trees.Since this results in those items poking through taxiways and aprons, etc., as you apparently are well aware(grin), some of those offending objects have to be suppressed. Rather than using individual exclude files, he chose to create what appear to be VTP polygons, or masks(not sure) which accomplish this and they are the following files named:VTBD_3.bgl, VTBD_5.bgl and VTBD_9.bglThus, to sum up, although there are files with _EX within their names, and these do appear to be "exclude" files, their purpose is to remove the default objects only and no such files are being applied to suppress unwanted autogen objects. This would then indicate that something other than an exclude file is responsible for your particular problem and as long as you have all the necessary files, have them organized in the appropriate directories, etc., and are using FS2004 Bangkok Scenery with FS9 _without_ any other scenery for this airport area, you shouldn't be seeing those objects.

GCBarni - Thanks very much for taking time to help me! ThrottleUp is grateful :)I will re-examine my file placement once more. <<<< This would then indicate that something other than an exclude file is responsible for your particular problem and as long as you have all the necessary files, have them organized in the appropriate directories, etc., and are using FS2004 Bangkok Scenery with FS9 _without_ any other scenery for this airport area, you shouldn't be seeing those objects. >>>>>Yes it confuses me too because with Bangkok Scenery (BS) *disabled* - the trees disappear! (But the airport is bare-bones). So I always thought that BS was the prob!
