February 8, 200521 yr I own Mega Scenery for both So Cal and Nor Cal, and am probably going to put it up on the swapmeet. I get persistent texture degradation, even with visibilty set quite low. And I have a pretty good rig (AMD 64 3.5; ATI 800XT Platinum, 1 gig of DDr 3200). Do owners of the VFR scenery - England or Nor. Cal experience the same things? Thanks for your help.
February 8, 200521 yr All photographic sceneries exhibit these issues. It's a problem with the FS9 scenery engine.I no longer have any problems with either Megascenery or the VFR scenery for England and Wales or any other photographic sceneries but it took quite a bit of tweaking to get there. -
February 8, 200521 yr I've got all 4 of the UK VFR sceneries and the VFR mesh that accompanies it along with all of Gary Summons's UK airports series and I have recently loaded the Megascenery for Socal. I find the UK scenery to be much crisper than the megascenery. It only has summer day textures though but I am enjoying exploring the UK from the air with a road map beside me! I am actually visiting many of the old disused WW2 bases in Suffolk and Lincolnshire. The runways can still be seen at many of them. Great fun. February 9, 200521 yr Of course the VFR UK scenes are crisper. They are from aereal photographs and not satellite images like the Megasceneries. That being said I have to agree that texture degradation is a constant issue with these kinds of add-ons. But since I use them for VFR in slow machines only I don't have much of a problem. Best thing to do is to set the autogen to low or completely switch it off. You won't need it anyway with these sceneries.
February 9, 200521 yr On a technical note, I found terrain mesh adjustment had a rather large affect on the texture issue, after autogen and visibility.__Josh

I do sometimes get the scenery blurring for a while but usually the high res textures pop in again fairly quickly.Tim http://members.chello.nl/t.westnutt/realair1.gif
February 9, 200521 yr Yes, low and slow are good ideas. In addition both VFR and Mega recommend using unlimited framerates. VFR also recommends severely restricting visibility to between 5-20 miles.Actually, when using that scenery for the intended purpose...VFR missions, 20 miles isn't such a bad idea. You're not going to see much farther than 20 miles from 3,000 agl anway. What make the FS9 engine work to paint things on the horizon that you couldn't see anyway.Regards,Jim
February 9, 200521 yr Hi Jim,Yes all true, I also find not using Extended Terrain Textures helps the scenery reload. Having the vis set to 20 miles or less and flying low, means you don't need them anyway.CheersTimhttp://members.chello.nl/t.westnutt/realair1.gif
February 10, 200521 yr Hi JimOn behalf of Sean, Rob and Bill thanks for the compliments!CheersTimhttp://members.chello.nl/t.westnutt/realair1.gif
February 10, 200521 yr Yes, E.T.T. needs to be turned off if you're planning on flying anything faster than 120 kts. This will also reduce loading time from several minutes to 1 minute or less. I find that a vis of 30 miles works fine with ETT disabled, you only rarely spot the unloaded textures at the horizon but since it's shrouded in haze it's not noticable at all.Actually since I started doing this, I've found that normal scenery also looks better with lower vis settings. With Unlimited or something like 60 miles, the air looks unnaturally clear for most places of the world. Also use VisualFlight's terrain visiblity adjuster (not sure whether it can be downloaded or comes on the scenery CDs) or manually adjust the "radius" lines in the fs9.cfg files. This will cause FS to start loading the textures slightly farther out so it has a better chance of loading the textures before you get close to them. -
