February 9, 200521 yr Haven't played flightsim in a month, but now it's giving me that error when I try to start, and I'm not sure what's going on.I have a commit charge of about 170megs, not bad at all and 512MB of RAM. Pretty much nothing else is running.I have 520GB of combined space, and the partition FS is running on has 24GB free.Hmmmm :-hmmm
February 9, 200521 yr Have you installed any new scenery? Sometimes a bad bgl file can use up all your memory and cause such errors. Discovered this when one of the bgl's I created for one of my sceneries got corrupted during compliation.Just a thought.Good luck,Adam
February 9, 200521 yr Author Moderator Hi,I can confirm Adam's suspicion that a bad BGL is the culprit. I was using ADCAD two days ago to add an extra runway to LEBL and something went wrong after saving it. When FS2004 loaded it failed with a "out of memory" error message. Temporarily removing the bad BGL resolved the problem.Take a look at any scenery you've just installed. It will almost certainly contain a bad BGL. Open SCENERY.CFG and change Active=TRUE to Active=FALSE for the last scenery installed. Assuming FS loads okay you then need to identify the bad BGL. It could well be the AFCAD one.Hope that helps. February 9, 200521 yr I was going to try it, but I'm not sure it'll work to be honest. The only scenery that I see in the scenery.cfg file (latest one) is Simflyers PHX, but I did several flights out/in from PHX with the SF scenery working perfectly before it stopped working.Hmmm
February 10, 200521 yr Author Moderator Greg,It's a simple change and easily reversible. What other options do you have? Ray (Cheshire, England). February 10, 200521 yr Well I tried the change, it got the splash sceen, but after that it simply didn't do anything, just stayed on the desktop. Not even fs9.exe was running the in taskbar.
February 10, 200521 yr Author Moderator Greg,Okay, let's try something else. Assuming you go straight into a flight (rather than be presented with the option to Create or Load one) open your FS9.CFG file and find the line that starts...SITUATION=Delete everything in that line after =. Save the change and start FS9. Report back what happens. One other thing... What was the last change you made prior to the problem?Slowly slowly catchy monkey :-)Cheers, Ray (Cheshire, England). February 10, 200521 yr Author Moderator Al,It contains scenery or scenery objects. BGL is reputed to stand for Bruce's Graphical Language. Bruce being Bruce Artwick - the originator of the original flight simulation program before Microsoft took it over many moons ago.Cheers, Ray (Cheshire, England). February 10, 200521 yr >Apologies chaps but what's a bgl file?>BGLs are program files which instruct the flight sim graphics engine how/where to draw scenery elements. scott s..
February 10, 200521 yr Ray,Nothing in the Situation line. What happened last, well that was probably a Simflyers install. I'm thinking that the cause of this was some hard drive corruption that happened to me as a result of moving my PC around. There were some bad sectors and I deleted them. When I come to think about it, I'm pretty sure that happened just after I last used it, and may be causing the problem.I guess there's no choice but a reinstall?
February 10, 200521 yr Author Moderator Greg,If you can't get FS running then your options are limited. If you have a lot of addons and can't face installing them again you could try to install over the top of your current installation. I'm not certain it will allow you to do that as I've never done it since installing FS9.Another option is to rename the FS9 folder to something like FS9OLD and then install a fresh version into the originally named location. In this case to a folder named FS9.That ensures the Registry entries remain correct. Once you have a virgin FS9 running you could then copy over any scenery packages one at a time although whether this is any quicker than reinstalling them is a moot point.Hope that helps. I think you've just been a bit unlucky with the bad sectors. Hard drives are usually pretty robust.Edited for extra advice. You'll need to reinstall the FS9 patch of course. Hopefully you have that available. Ray (Cheshire, England). February 10, 200521 yr Ray,Well I don't have that many, but if I can save doing it all the better. Now, after I reinstall I just simply copy over everything from gauges/aircraft/sound/aircraft that I want to keep?
February 10, 200521 yr Author Moderator Greg,If you don't have that many I suggest you install them afresh. That ensures everything goes into the correct locations. The last thing you want is to copy over a file that could have become corrupted. I wouldn't recommend you mass copy all the gauges, aircraft files etc.Once you have the new version running with everything reinstalled you can delete the original installation and defrag the drive. It looks like you have a large drive so that can probably wait a little while until you're sure you've covered everything.I'm off to bed now - good luck! Ray (Cheshire, England).
