Microsoft Sidewinder locking up in virtual cockpit

I am currently flying the PMDG 737 pm FSX. I have noticed at random times in the flight the joystick completely locks up in Virtual cockpit and I have to switch to 2D Cockpit. Is this because the normal wear and tear of the joystick over many years or a software issue? Unplugging the joystick and plugging it back in does not work. It takes a complete restart of FSX for this to happy. I do run in Windowed mode with a 3 monitor set up. I click in and out of the sim like most of us do to access ASN, EFB, charts, etc.
