The Ultimate Oculus Rift Reactions

Featured Replies

You know, until I saw this, it never occurred to me to wonder how the disparity between what a person is seeing and how their body reacts might be a problem for some when encountering the Oculus. I suspect even experienced flight simmers might get vertigo during wild maneuvers in 3D space.

How does it make people fall over? There are lots of Vids of people doing the roller coaster demo, and most of them lose their balance and have to be caught. Probably grist for a scientific study on virtual reality.

I have used it and it is very easy to get disoriented. I was a little surprised because I have been using trackir for years without problems.

You don't have agreement between what your eyes see and what your body is feeling. Sudden changes in perceived direction or speed while wearing the OR had me shifting my weight to keep balance even though I was standing upright and stationary.

I do not have this problem with the trackir because I can still see my surroundings in the real world. I imagine that the OR would be very useful to simulate disorientation in IMC.

I can't watch the videos right now but expect that the reactions are very similar to the ones I had.

Well just got a new grill.... next is an Oculus, I guess. I was only partially interested until I saw videos like this. Now I'm intrigued!

When I heard about the Oculus system the first thing I thought of was vertigo when used it in flight simulation. I think I'd get "airsick" for sure using it. I think I'd like it better for something like driving/racing sims or maybe an FPS.

Just got to watch the vids. A lot them felt like I was watching people who were scared of roller coasters. Clearly it was convincing for them.

There are a few in there where the people clearly are trying to balance or brace themselves due to the perceived motion and changes in direction.

My biggest mistake was to sprint forward in half life and then abruptly let go of the control stick resulting in an instantaneous full stop. I nearly leapt forward a foot to brace myself from the fall my brain expected! :)
