June 19, 201411 yr Hey guys, is there any chance, to get wind-datas in the FMC with my ASE, oder do I really need AS2012? Best regards Flo

Hey Flo - I actually just responded to you over on the channel, but I'll put it here too, in case anyone happens by it. First, you actually need ASN to get the automatic WX file creation. That doesn't mean that you can't do it with ASE or AS2012 (or anything else, really). There are instructions in the FSX > PMDG > WX folder on how to copy and paste the data into Notepad and create a WX file. It requires some extra work (versus ASN doing it for you), but it'll work. So to confirm, if I have ASN running with my flight plan loaded, and I request wind data in the 777, ASN will create a new weather file real time, and update the CDU with the most up to date wind forecasts in flight? When looking at the WX file in the WX folder, the date modified stays the same, even when I request the wind data at a later time. Are the forecasts still updating, but the wind file stays the same? -Jacob

Over thinking it a little here... The REQUEST action simply looks for a WX file in the PMDG > WX folder. Since this file can come from ASN, PFPX, a couple other add-ons, hand made by you, perhaps your dog, and other sources, there's no good way to code in a feature to "ask X to refresh the file." If there's a file there, it reads it, regardless of if it's been updated or not. I'm unsure of whether or not ASN will automatically update the file (as I mentioned earlier - that's a question for HiFi). With PFPX, you have to export a new file each time. As Julian mentioned, the ability for programs (or yourself) to update the WX file has been fixed in SP1. Kyle Rodgers

Related to the updating of the weather, in SP1, will ASN give winds based on the flightplan that is put into it, or will it see the flightplan in the FMC, and give wind data based on that? For example: If the route is changed inflight, and a new wind uplink is requested. -Jacob

For example: If the route is changed inflight, and a new wind uplink is requested. ASN has to work off of what it sees. ASN can't see what the FMC has in it. That would mean ASN would have to have a module for every add-on plane out there, which isn't a scalable project. So, just ensure the plan you're loading into the FMC is the same plan you've dropped out as a RTE file (FSX default format). Most websites and flight planning resources will allow you to do this. If you modify the plan, in flight, you usually just get a direct, or similar, so all it does is just ignore some of the data in that WX file (the plane is essentially looking for a matching fix name in the WX file - if there are additional fixes in the WX file versus what's in the plan, it just ignores them). If you're tossing the old plan out completely, you'll want to create a new RTE file (FSX format) and load it into ASN when you change the route in the FMC, and then re-request the perf data.
