What About Level Turns?

Featured Replies

I probably missed reports of how the simulated FBW system copes with level turns in the PMDG 777.

How do you find it in terms of being able to maintain, according to the FCOM, the turn without other input required than the yoke being deflected to bank, up to, I believe, 30º?

P.S.: Found another interesting source of info on the exquisite system the Boeing FBW C*U law is...

Near the end of section 11.8.1 in this document we can read:

" An additional feature incorporated into the pitch control

law is turn compensation, which enables the pilot to maintain a constant altitude with minimal column
input during a banked turn."

which suggests, contrarily to what I presumed from reading the FCOM, that indeed column input may still be required, even if minimal.

We tested this pretty extensively and it's not perfect in real life - there's sometimes a bit of back pressure needed. Our estimate was that it removed around 70% or so of the nose drop tendency at 30 degrees of bank. (assuming an in-trim airplane, speed not changing etc)

Thx Tabs, that's actually how I read in the text I linked in my post.

Initially I thought it was like in an Airbus, but that text specifically says:

"which enables the pilot to maintain a constant altitude with minimal column
input during a banked turn."

So, I believe you did it just right, since some column input is actually needed in the real 777 too :-)
