Black Screen At Freeflight And After Loading Fsx

Recommended Posts

Here's one possible solution to the infamous black screen you might see at startup (in the preview screen) and after loading FSX/P3D. This happened to me suddenly today and without explanation (just like other cases I have read).

Things I did to try to fix the problem with no success:

  • Deleted FSX.cfg and restarted FSX and let the config rebuild.
  • Disabled all modules in the dll.xml by changing the one line "<Disabled>False<Disabled>" to "<Disabled>True<Disabled"
  • Disabled all modules in the exe.xml in same manner as dll.xml
  • Disabled all addon scenery
  • Moved all addon aircraft such as PMDG aircraft to Temporary folder
  • Uninstalled and reinstalled NVIDIA drivers
  • Went to previous version of NVIDIA drivers (I had recently updated to the latest)
  • Went from Windowed Mode to Full Screen Mode and back to Windowed Mode.
  • Checked my P3DV2 program and found the preview screen was working and aircraft was showing up
  • Searched the Internet thru Google extensively using "Black Screen in FSX" as search term.  Many complaints w/no solutions. Some indicated they found the solution but never provided information about the solution making the issue even more frustrating
  • System restore to a date before the problem started happening.

How I fixed the problem:  I put in the FSX Acceleration disk and made a repair.  I went into my FSX settings page to turn off DX10 Preview and saw that it was not there.  Since I knew DX10 Preview only comes with SP2 and FSX Acceleration, I did a repair installation of Acceleration.  The repair did not remove any entries in my fsx.cfg, dll.xml, exe.xml, or scenery.cfg so the fix was super easy.  If you just have SP2 installed, I suspect doing a repair or reinstall of this SP will work just as well.

Thought I would post this here in the event someone else runs into this problem and hopefully it will save them from any pain and suffering I just went through!!!  If anyone else has solutions to their Black Screen, please post them in this topic.

Black Screens are basically the same as CTD's as you have no access to the FSX Menu after loading and going from Windowed Mode to Full Screen and back to Windowed Mode does nothing but make the screen even bigger and blacker. This is the main reason why I'm posting this problem here.

Best regards,
