FSX crashes in DirectX 9 mode (Windows 8.1)

I installed FSX Gold on my Windows 8.1 PC.  I can only run the game in DirectX 10 preview mode or else the game has a fatal error either immediately or soon after a flight is initiated.  As well as bugs, a lot of addons have compatibilty issues with DirectX 10 mode, so I would like to know is there a way I can run FSX in DirectX 9 mode.  The only addons I have installed are CS 727, CS 130 and Mega Airport Dublin (also Editvoicepack and the bug fixes for DX10).  I have an AMD R9 270 graphics card.  Thanks in advance.
