Hi there Rob,

Now if i have interpreted your question correctly, you want to know

1)Why you are getting this error

2)How,you could avoid getting such a error in the future.

1)First of Engine fail L obviously means you have lost power on the Left engine(engine 1) which means engine speed is below idle.

I highly suggest using the QRH AND the electronic checklist, which in itself is more than enough to find a solution to your problem.

Now ELEC backup sys. fail means your electrical system has failed.

What you see below are excerpts from your standard QRH:

                        ELEC BACKUP SYS:

Condition: The backup power system is failed.
Attempt only one reset per flight.
1 L BACKUP GEN switch . . . . . . . . . Off, then ON
Attempt only one reset per flight.
2 R BACKUP GEN switch . . . . . . . . . Off, then ON
ELEC BATTERY OFF
Condition: The battery switch is OFF.
ELEC BUS ISLN L, R
Condition: The bus tie breaker is open.
ELEC CABIN/UTIL OFF
Condition: The cabin/utility power switch is OFF.

                                                   AND
                                      ENGINE FAIL L:

that is on pg 123 of your qrh.the checklist itself is quite lenghty so i would suggest  you read it up.

2) the failures may have occurred because you had service based failures checked on the fmc pmdg options page.if you dont want such failures  un-select that.you wont get random failures anymore.

hope this helps, and hope i answered your question.
let me know how it goes,
warm regards,
H.Mahesh
