Beacon question

Featured Replies

Not a real pilot but my understanding is that beacon goes on when aircraft is electrically powered up and off when electrically powered down. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I certainly could be. :D Adam

On just before engine start and left on until after engine shut-down.

The red flashing beacons are switched on to indicate that the aircraft is active...meaning either the engines are running or will be started...or that the aircraft will be moving...such as pushback for large aircraft. The white strobes are only turned on just prior to takeoff as these are very distracting during ground operations to other pilots and ground personnel. The only exception to the rule that I am aware of is the Diamond Katana which does not have a red beacon, so we switch on the white strobes to indicate an active aircraft. There may be others, but I am not immediately aware of them.
