HC VC shadow "range"

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've noticed that with HD shadows enabled, the maximum distance at which the shadows are cast is reduced. It is especially visible with low-wing aircraft, where the shadows get cut off somewhere near half wing length (I understand this feature was originally intended for tubeliners/bizjets where you don't really see any surfaces outside the flight deck). Is there any way to make the distance adjustable without killing performance?

Thanks!

No, but there is an option to turn off external shadows (when in VC) to hide it a bit. Its in debug untick Show HD Exterior Shadows.

You can also disable adaptive zoom in debug which might reduce the zoom and cutoff a little.

Its an unsolvable problem, if you are going to zoom the texture used for shadow calculations something has to fall outside it and no longer cast shadows. With access to the core you would use a bigger shadowmap texture or multiple shadowmaps at different scales.

None of this is performance related. For (small) aircraft where the wings can be easily seen from the cockpit the optimum shadow coverage accuracy comes with non HD shadows.

Thanks for the detailed explanation, I'll experiment with the settings a bit then (and probably get back to using non-HD shadows).
