I was just wondering why a METAR wind such as VRB03KTS is reported in the local weather report as 040 03 KTS or 050 03KTS or... and not VRB 03KTS

The sim does not accommodate purely variable winds with no average direction, so the LWE weather interpolator (WINTER algorithm) calculates the most likely direction based on local conditions and then associates a variability with that. The sim MUST have a base direction associated with any wind and variable winds.

 

The interpolation is not a problem as the prevailing wind directions should be used anyway and let's face it the direction is not that important when the wind speed is just a few knots. In any case, the best direction is chosen to match the local or wider areas conditions.
