FSX Acceleration killed my frame rate!

Featured Replies

Oh dear!

I recently installed FSX for the first time, and after setting bufferpools=0 consistently achieved 30fps locked to half refresh rate.

Then the Acceleration pack arrived so I installed it straight away. Guess what? My fps halved!

I double checked I didn't have DX10 enabled, then I ran fs9 on the same pc which still sat at a solid 30fps.

So I uninstalled Acceleration, and the FSX fps stayed at half what it had been prior to installation.

I then restored the system to pre-Acceleration status, and lo and behold - solid 30fps once more.

I really want to use Acceleration. Any ideas anyone?

I noticed odd effects from the first time I ever installed Accleration which was my original install of FSX.  I noticed one thing was due to the photo scenery I fly over all the time.  Buildings would disappear depending on what vector I approached a city or airport on.  I finally had to cave in and stay with SP1.  I also noticed a fps hit but not nearly to the extent you saw.  It's possible something would have overwrote some of your custom FSX.cfg settings if you had any.  Or you've hit some of the other odd issues.  Probably the only solution if you want an enhanced FSX is Prepare3D.  My system is quite old now but I still maintain a good 30fps as long as I fly VFR only and fly with only ground traffic.  AI of any type, due to the age of my system, slows FSX quite a bit but FS9 is quite different, which screams even when running AI.  Sorry I can't help more but just wanted to let you know I've observed something similar, always with Acceleration.  From time to time I do enable it when I want to fly an Acceleration only A/C but very, very rarely do the type of third party aircraft I've purchased require it.  Even all of Carenado's aircraft and Alabeo's aircraft state it's a requirement, but they run just fine (for me) using SP1 only.

I thought I'd try re-installing Acceleration. All good now, even with DTX10 enabled. Very strange. However, I did notice some flashing artifacts that weren't there pre=Acceleration.

Acceleration (or SP2) will allow you to enable DX10 Preview. The problem with DX10 Preview is that it was not fully programmed by Microsoft before the development team was laid off. If you have DX10 Preview enabled, then you will see artifacts. This was fixed by Steve's DX10 Fixer. See the AVSIM DX10 Forum and check out Steve's DX10 Fixer Forum hosted here on AVSIM.

Thanks, Jim. I've looked at the fixer and I think I'lljust turn off DX10 until I'm more familiar with Acceleration. I haven't noticed any improvements over DX9 as yet!
