ATC is your friend!!

Recommended Posts

Was training a new Navajo Pilot today at one of the local airfields and we were going to be doing a rejected takeoff on the roll. We were monitoring tower when we heard tower call an aircraft to overshoot because he didn't put his gear down!! We looked over and sure enough there was a C177 20 feet above the threshold without the gear down!! He overshot and came back around for a wheels down landing... If that were me I'd be buying the guys in the tower complete dinners and more!!

I was holding short for traffic once and my CFI said, "This guy's gear is still up". Just about five feet AGL and directly in front of us we saw the pilot make a futile attempt to slam the gear handle down before he hit. The main gear fell out OK and the squat switches made which disabled the nose gear motor. Needless to say he stopped very quickly, took an artisticly modified prop home for a souvenir, and had the engine rebuilt. And I had to go to another runway to takeoff.Glenn
