FSX freezes in mid air with this error

Recommended Posts

I have tried flying the same route from EGKK to EGAA, and the sim locks up mid flight.

I have tried this route about 4 times now. I never get past half way, and have not landed for a while. Since I got back into FSX and PMDG 737 flying, I have been unable to complete this flight. ^_^

I am running a few extra add ons which other people seem to use without any problems. I am using very reserved graphc settings. Tried the UIAutomationCore fix. Set my firewall to game mode, so that ASN is not limited.

I guess I could use a process of elimination, and stop using ASN or FS2Crew and see if I get through a flight, but this would be time consuming.

But maybe somebody can make out what the error might be, or they can see a pattern. It is worth a shout.?

Turn your settings down and see what happens.

They (the FSX settings) are all already down, to the lowest setting.

The gloable textures is maxed, maybe this will have to go as well.

ERROR (what does this mean?)
Faulting application name: fsx.exe, version: 10.0.61472.0, time stamp: 0x475e17d3
Faulting module name: msvcrt.dll, version: 7.0.7601.17744, time stamp: 0x4eeaf722

It means the faulting module was a module that belongs to one of the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables for Windows 7.  As you know, you are required to have Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 w/SP1, 2008 w/SP1, and, depending on what you have installed, the 2010 version.  FSX/Acceleration will not run properly without the 2005 w/SP1 version.  But this error references Windows 7 and this is the version that was installed with Windows 7 and not for FSX.  I have never seen this version crashing before but everyone says the best fix is to reinstall it.  I have the same version on my system.  It is difficult to tell which version belongs to Windows 7 but you will need the 64 bit version as that is the version that crashed.  FSX only uses the X86 versions (32 bit) as FSX and all of the FSX addons are 32 bit operating in a 64 bit environment.  Hopefully you have in your Add/Remove programs showing MS Visual 2005, 2008, and 2010 (x86) installed.  The 64 bit versions are not required but the latest Microsoft Visual C++, 64 bit, for Windows 7 is required to run Windows 7.  The AVSIM CTD Guide provides more details about MSVCRT crashes but it was the Windows 7 version that caused your crash.  Probably the 2012 or 2010 versions, 64 bit.  Microsoft Visuals are used by Microsoft to make sure your application was installed properly, as intended by the developer (in this case Windows 7).  Just make sure you do not have any 64 bit versions of 2005 and 2008 installed as those versions would be useless on your computer.  The 2010 and 2012 versions might be required for Windows 7 but I cannot be positive.

If you have any uiautomationcore.dll installed in your main FSX directory, remove it.  It could be a wrong version (possible a 64 bit version or a very new version which would never work with FSX).  It is part of the Microsoft.net Framework packages which are used by Microsoft to manage memory and make sure your applications run as intended.  So, if you have the wrong version of the uiautomationcore.dll, Microsoft Visual could crash as it is seeing a wrong version that is conflicting with FSX.

You should also try uninstalling FSX SP2 and then reinstalling it.  That has fixed problems like this before.

Your computer is not very powerful so you have to be careful with your settings as Jim mentioned already.  High settings in the FSX.cfg or display driver or a bad tweak, like the Bufferpools tweak, are the most common cause of crashes.

The AVSIM CTD Guide provides more guidance.

Thank you Jim, that was a very knowledgeable post, and will take a bit of investigating. I will have to try a few of these options.

I may get back to you on some of these options with questions.

best regards

Your reply has revealed some possibilities but I might still need a bit of guidance before I start messing with these items.

PS sorry for the slightly intrusive advertising on the image hosting, is there a image upload option on this forum?

Which Visual C ++ here > < might need modifying, removing or adding?

I really do not know.  But, from the image you provided, it was interesting to note that you have TWO installations of Microsoft Visual 2008 x86 and 64 bit.  I honestly do not know how that can happen.  It's a computer technological impossibility in my opinion.  It looks like you have Windows 8 installed so that could be the cause yet there is absolutely no reason for Windows 8 to issue a Microsoft Visual for 2005 or 2008.  Ah, computers!  The AVSIM CTD Guide provides a picture of the proper versions of every Microsoft Visual you need for FSX (2005, 2008, and 2010)(see pages 6 and 7).  You do not have those versions installed.  They are really old ones.  So, it appears this is most likely the problem.  The AVSIM Guide provides links to the proper versions too.  I would uninstall them all and reinstall them.  Like I said, you do not need the 64 bit versions UNLESS you are running an application that was developed for 64 bit systems.  There might be some recent games out there that were developed for 64 bit systems.

While you are there looking at the AVSIM Guide, look at your installation of Microsoft.net too.  You need 2.0, 3.5, and 4.0 installed.  Microsoft.net packages work with Microsoft Visuals to make your application work properly.

orry for the slightly intrusive advertising on the image hosting, is there a image upload option on this forum?

There is no image hosting here at AVSIM.  I use Oz Hosting which is donationware - http://fsfiles.org/flightsimshotsv2/index.php.%C2'>

The AVSIM CTD Guide, page 1 and 2 provide guidance for running AppCrashView.  It shows more details about your crashes and the information you provided in OP was insufficient.  AppCrashView interprets all Windows Error Report (WER) crashes which you had.  It does not provide a solution but it does tell me what was loaded.

The guide also provides a way for you to investigate the "crime scene" where your FSX crashed.  Every computer is different.  Every setup is different.  You could have a wrong voltage set in the BIOS and you will see crashes.  There are so many possibilities thus the AVSIM CTD Guide which was just updated.

Hope this helps.

I do notice sometimes that when you install the PMDG NGX it will update the the visual basic from the installer.  I didn't question it at the time, but it is worth making a note of this the next time it happens. I am going completely from memory, but there are times when this software is updated on the fly.

Just yo clarify, I am using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1) Build, and not Windows 8.

Thanks for the report.

Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 w/sp1 is up-to-date (loaded modules 4, 5, 56, and 59 are files belonging to MSV 2005).

Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 w/sp1 is out of date (see modules 202 and 203).  Ending version number should be 6161 instead.  MSV 2008 supports Microsoft.net 3.5 so, one of your applications/addons you loaded needs Microsoft.net 3.5.  Use the verification tool in the AVSIM CTD Guide to verify you have this dotnet installed (should have been installed by the application/addon needing it).

Microsoft Visual C++2010 (module 198) loaded okay.  It is required by PMDG and some other products.  Do not see a problem here.

The faulting module, MSVCRT.dll is part of the Windows 7 system.  It loaded okay (Loaded Module 6) but could have failed later.  Believe this module belongs to MS Visual 2005 or 2008.  The version is up-to-date.

I think you have a compatibility problem here.  Go to the main FSX folder and right click FSX.exe and select Properties.  Click on the compatibility tab and make sure the Compatibility Mode is not selected and none of the Settings boxes are checked.  Under Privilege Level, make sure "Run this program as an administrator" is checked for all users.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jim for you help here,

I will investigate this problem tonight. It does seem like a conflict, I have done lots of flights with this set up ok. And it is orsome when it works! Just got to look at what you said and try and fix it.

EDIT

I think you have a compatibility problem here.  Go to the main FSX folder and right click FSX.exe and select Properties.  Click on the compatibility tab and make sure the Compatibility Mode is not selected and none of the Settings boxes are checked.  Under Privilege Level, make sure "Run this program as an administrator" is checked for all users.

I have just unchecked compatibility mode, which was selected to WIN 7,  I have now selected run as admin for all users. I have not touched any of the C ++ yet. Should I go and do a flight to test it? Is this the only problem? I guess I should find out.

I will let you know what happens.

I did another flight and it crashed, pretty much like it did before. about half way in the flight over the HON VOR

The FSX is so smooth up to this point.  Just to reiterate I switched FSX compatibility mode to none, and t is run as administrator for all users. I am running FSX from the Admin user anyway. I'm starting to wonder if the VFR scenery is the problem. This is were the south of England textures meet the northern ones, in a perfect straight line.

But I will see what you think first.

I see you have not change or upgraded Microsoft Visual 2008 (modules 207 and 207 are a couple outdated modules).  Will it fix your problem completely.  I doubt it but, if you were to ever remove Microsoft Visual 2005 and 2008, FSX would not start up.  You would not even get to the startup screen so that's just to show you how important this files be kept up to date.

I have a very bad cold that I got yesterday and it went from bad to worse so I'm going to bed (about 4 pm on the East Coast) and try to sleep it off.  I was not able to sleep last night because of the pain and suffering but I have to find some sleep.

Did you move your dll.xml over to a temporary directory to see if the crashes still occur upon shutting down.  You might have to open the dll.xml with Notepad and change the line for all of your modules (except the top one) that states "<disabled>False<disabled>" and change the False to True.  This will disable that module and it will not load at startup so don't load any addon that requires the entry like the PMDG 737.  This is simply for testing purposes as one of your modules may not be working properly.  If you have tweaks in your FSX.cfg, some tweaks can destroy your system (like the BufferPool tweak - got that advice from NickN).  For some, if not employed properly (okay it has the wrong figures), you system will become unstable.   You just cannot throw a tweak into your config thinking it will work great.  For instance, I use no tweaks and have a great running system.  I did employ the BufferPool tweak once (well, the exact same settings as suggested by NickN as he had the exact system, MB and CPU and GPU that I have).  Uh, long stutters or FSX would simply shutdown.  Now, maybe he had a voltage setting or another setting in the BIOS set and I didn't and this is the reason why it did not work for me.  But I'm digressing as I don't even know if you have tweaks at all and this could all be for naught.

Make sure you have UAC disabled as you have your FSX installation in the default folders (which is okay.  I have everything installed in the default folders too and see few problems).  But the "computer experts" say put it outside of the x86 folder like in C:\FSX or D:\FSX.  If you disable the UAC, that should fix any security problems.

Also, right click the main fsx folder and select Properties.  Look under the shared tab and make sure the folder is shared.

I have a lot of other suggestions in the AVSIM CTD Guide that you can try.  I even have a detailed procedure for setting up Process Monitor for just FSX.  So, when FSX is running, you will only see FSX and FSX addons loading.  You get a crash and then write down the current computer time.  When finished, you open up the load and go to that time (there will be thousands of entries) and you might see what was loading at that minute or second.  Just provides a clue to your crashes, that's all.

I'm thinking the VFR scenery you are using is photoscenery.  The AVSIM CTD Guide gives guidance for photoscenery.  Photoscenery will load anywhere in the world even if you are not flying over it.  So you want to make sure any photoscenery you will not be using is disabled in the scenery.cfg.  If not, you'll simply run out of VAS super fast.

That's about it Julian.  Hopefully it will help you.  I will probably be out of commission for a couple of days trying to recuperate.  Good luck.

Best regards,

Yes thank you for your help, there are a few things I can try here, I do remember doing some tweaks to the CFG file a few months back, afinity mask and bufferpools sound familiar, I remember seeing a few youtube videos where improved frame rates were promised buy tweaking lines of code. I still have my old cfg file so it is worth trying that.  I will try update Microsoft Visual 2008 s sugested. But will do a flight with the original CFG file first.

I have to bite the bullet at some stage and start reintalling some elements.

Ironically I feel like I have a head cold, you know where you have the symptoms of the begining of a cold, with a sore throats and headace.

Thanks for your help.

Get well soon
