May 28, 200521 yr Those cloud files that go from 512 to 128 t 64. Is there as much of a FR increase of smoothness as is clamed?JimCYWG
May 28, 200521 yr Author Sorry, I wanted to edit the last word to say "claimed" but the time had expired.JimCYWG
May 28, 200521 yr I see a difference between 512 and 128, but not between 128 and 64. And whether the clouds are 32 bit or DXT3 makes no difference, other than 32 bit looks a lot better. I use 128x128, 32 bit clouds with no mips. Last item--mips can have an impact on Nvidia cards because it seems Nvidia likes to antialias mipped textures. Some say they see no difference, and others will tell you there's no difference in order to get you to buy something ;)-John
May 28, 200521 yr Where to find those John?Johan[A HREF=http://jdserver.no-ip.com]Personal Server[/A]or..http://62.238.33.10
May 28, 200521 yr "Some say they see no difference, and others will tell youthere's no difference in order to get you to buy something ;)"LOL, good one John! While I agree on he ATI vs nVidia deal, wouldn't eliminating the Mips hurt performance since that is the main reason they are implemented, ie displaying a smaller, less detailed texture at further distances?Regards, MichaelKDFWhttp://www.calvirair.com/mcpics/mcdcvabanner.jpgCalVirAir International Best, Michael KDFW
May 28, 200521 yr I'm using the free 16kb cloud textures from FSW (HiFps v2) http://fsw.simflight.comThey do give me a decent boost in fps, and don't look that bad I find. It all comes down to your system how much they will help.
May 28, 200521 yr As far as I can tell, eliminating the mips did not hurt performance. Can't say why though, as I believe the same as you. Perhaps MSFS does something a bit different when it comes to clouds. -John
May 28, 200521 yr Author When you guys talk about MIPS, is that the setting in the hardware section of the settings display? JimCYWG
May 28, 200521 yr Hey Jim, no the Mips we are talking about are the actual mip maps in the textures themselves. MSFS (and other games) included textures (scenery and aircraft) with MipMaps to help with performance, unfortunately, they end up causing poor visual quality more than anything else (blurries in aircraft textures). Basically you have the main texture and several copies of it, going down in size all compressed together. Theoretically the farthest distance from you, displays the smallest, lowest quality texture.Regards, MichaelKDFWhttp://www.calvirair.com/mcpics/mcdcvabanner.jpgCalVirAir International Best, Michael KDFW
