July 11, 201510 yr Has anyone taken this bird out to it's maximum range yet? What was your experience like? I'm curious if a pond crossing is even feasible without a gas stop in Iceland, but I'd like to try it sometime. Thoughts?
July 11, 201510 yr Define pond crossing. St. John to Shannon is less than 1,700 nm. I have done several ~2,000 nm flights, with reserves intact, including Vienna to Dubai, which is 2,300 nm, although with favorable winds. I think the official range figures from Raytheon were 2,642 nm (with IFR reserves).
July 12, 201510 yr Author A typical pond crossing in my mind is LGA/JFK/BOS to EGKK or EGSS. I think it's doable from KBOS, but just.
July 13, 201510 yr KBOS to EGKK is 2853 nm on a great circle. I think you'll need to plan DCT, have a 100+ kt tailwind all the way and hope to get a straight-in at Gatwick ... and have a tractor stand-by in case you have a flame-out whilst taxiing in
