Airline Traffic Basics

Featured Replies

Can someone give me some basic instructions on how to get more traffic for airports in FS9. I've turned the realism traffic to 100% but Heathrow still seems dead. Also in Sydney YSSY, the only traffic appears to be small crappy prop planes.I'm new to add-ons, so in "beginners" terms I would like some advice on how to get more traffic and the steps involved to get this happening.

If you want something that is simple to set up, and gives you great looking airline traffic and won't take every waking minute of your time to configure, get Ultimate Traffic. You install it, run a compile program that takes a few minutes, and you are finished. http://www.flight1.com/products.asp?product=utraffic

Thanks for that. Is it free and will it come with all types of Qantas aircraft for example? The website seems a little general on giving info on what your actually downloading.

> Is it free and will it come with all types of Qantas aircraft for example?Project AI is free. I'm not sure about Qantas but I would expect they have a Qantas package; they have most airlines covered.> The website seems a little general on giving info on what your actually downloading.Spend a little time exploring the Web site and then download the installer and a package or two. Install those and see what you think. It's pretty straightforward. Even I figured it out. R-

Get PAI. Nothing could be more simpler to install.Download all the carriers you need from here - http://www.projectai.com/packages/installers.php(Qantas, Air New Zealand, Australian, Jetstar, Pacific Blue and Virgin Blue should be enough to pack Melbourne and Sydney. Ozjet isn't available yet)Download PAI installer - http://www.projectai.com/packages/installer.php(while you're there, get the default traffic remover too)Select multiple packages at once using the installer (CTRL-A when using OPEN package) and use the automated install option. Cheers,Keith

AI traffic requires three elements:AI AircraftAI FlightPlansAI Modified Airport ParkingThe PAI packages are an EXCELLENT starting point.Go to Official Files - the Library is just like the library here - you have to know what you want and how to install it manually.Aircraft and flightplans in one easy to install with the PAI packages.Be sure to get the AFCAD packages and install them.If you put a bunch of AI traffic into your FS and do not have parking for the aircraft - you will have a lot of problems. The default YSSY has parking for:28 - B737 or smaller aircraft9 - B767 / A300 sized aircraft1 - B747/ B777/ A330/ A340 sized aircraft0 - Cargo specific aircraftYou will not be happy with that airport without sufficient parking.EGLL is a bit better with:2 - Large GA spots (Dash-8 and regional jet size)15 - B737 sized small gates19 - B767 sized medium gates17 - B747 sized heavy gates6 - dedicated Cargo spotsPAI doesn't have every airport in the world - but is a very good starting point. The PAI YSSY and EGLL AFCAD files have 100-150 parking spots.I have and use all the PAI packages, and a lot of other repaints which are not available for any other AI model.I also have Ultimate Traffic - I find it to be an incredible time saver for AI traffic and a fantastic shell to keep all the AI traffic in one place (I just replaced the UT United Parcel Service (UPS) flight plans with the new ones from Boris).I've also purchased My Traffic - not a bad program - but Southwest Airlines aircraft at KDFW just rubs me the wrong way.Try the PAI packages as a start - then decide if you want to get involved with a payware package. Or you want to move into doing things yourself manually. For tutorials on adding repaints, adding flight plans, etc - two great resources - The Jet Doctor files on Steve Wilson's site - under the Learning Center and John Goodwin's site.http://www.wilsonsairspace.com/index.htmlhttp://www.john-goodwin.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/index.htmlYes I've been doing this for years and have the latest EvolveAI, AIA, FSP and other models - though I do have all the PAI ones and some are better than anything else available. But I keep those websites bookmarked and refer to them often. Finally - if you run into a problem or question - ASK.If might have been asked already and don't let anyone discourage you from asking questions. The concepts can be difficult to grasp initially - but if I learned, anyone can.

What the others are saying here is absolutly correct - either buy something like Ultimate Traffic or use Project AI installers - that is the easy option and a good way to start. However, there are better AI aircraft out there:Especially in the Premier League - Aardvark for all Boeings (except 777), DC9's, MD80's, Embraer 120's and 170's www.ai-aardvark.comAfter that in division 2 the rest:FS Painter for Airbuses and Boeing 777 (have to search for those in this Avsim file library - best to search for FSP*)Failing that ARNZ for Airbus A320's arnz.myhost.co.nzEvolve AI for DC10's www.evolveai.com and a link to:CDAI and DJC for L1011's, various regional jets and turbopropsSo if you want to do it the HARD way download those aircraft and install them manually. Then you can either replace the PAI/UT models if you've followed that route (and it won't be long before you start replacing your PAI Boeings with Aardvark once you realise they look better and give you better frame rates) ORdon't bother with PAI or UT at all and get your flightplans and installer from MRAI www.mostrealisticai.com.It all depends how much of a pilot you are and how much of a "trainspotter" who spends most of his cockpit time admiring the AI aircraft moving around him on the airport. If accurate, good looking and low frame rate AI is vital to you, you'll have to do it the hard way anyway eventually, so you might as well start now and forget about PAI and UT.If something that looks well, OK, will do - then do it the easy way. The differences are in things like engines that look genuinely round and not octagonal, planes with have flaps and spoilers showing on landing etc - and on the new Aardvark MD80 low frame rate thrust reversers too!But beware, once you start AI the hard way, it will take up half your time!

Spot on!I just spent the best part of a year manually installing my AIA and FSP with MRAI flightplans all over thwe world. The rewards are truly outstanding. As real as FS can look traffic-wise. I started way back with PAI and UT, but you quickly see the shortfalls and strive for something far better. You got to start somewhere though, it takes a few months to get your head round how it all gels together but once it clicks, the AI bug gets you good!

A good link for a lot of information about all the various AI aircraft types / modelers is a forum on the Flightsimmer.com site (also PAI):http://www.flightsimmer.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=166Also, don't believe anyone who says one groups models are universally better than others.Download the free version of ACM - Aircraft Container Manager and check for yourself.PAI has been able to make models by other modelers available to wider audience than many other methods. The best source in my opinion for FSP models and information is http://www.fsrepaints.de/MRAI is a great source for flight plans, about 40% of the world's airlines are available, though many are a couple years old. Their installer is an essential tool for adding airlines.Perhaps the best thing about the MRAI installer is that it is forcing standards on the AI community.Equally critical with AI traffic levels, texture types and models is Scenery and User Aircraft.Simply put 50% of your graphics processor or more can be consumed by an extremely complex virtual cockpit. They are great - but they can easily bring your computer to it's knees.Scenery is the current worst FPS hog in FS, though some user aircraft are catching up.The default EGLL scenery eats more resources than 120 PAI A320v1 and B747v1 aircraft. Addon sceneries are even worse. If you want to get started - go with packages. You'll be flying in crowded skies in less than an hour.If you want to understand, and you will - be sure to read the links from the AIA main page about LOD Modeling and Low Polygon Modeling. But understand the same thing applies to your user aircraft and scenery. Also understand that not having adequate parking for AI will hurt performance. Also things like IM and chat running, fragmented hard drives, non-contigious swap files, etc - will all take their toll on the performance of FS.Some people are willing to accept a huge percentage of their system resources tied up in a detailed cabin - which they see once per flight. And complain about a 3,000 polygon AI model. Doesn't make a lot of sense. But that is the real beauty of FS - you can have it exactly the way you want!!
