Hyper-threading and 2.5

Featured Replies

Since I began using V2 I had turned the Hyper-threading feature of my i7 3820 off and used an affinity mask of 14, 1110. Through 2.4 this worked quite well and I was pleased with performance and the look of the sim environment. When I made the change to 2.5, I also at the same time, upgraded to REX Texture Direct 4 from Essential Plus (I also have Soft Clouds). V2.5 is fantastic, I was however a little underwhelmed with the clouds. I felt that REX Essential in 2.4 looked better, most of the time. Okay, the topic is about hyper-threading right? Yeah, so yesterday while reading some threads I thought about turning HT on to see if any change was visible. I changed the affinity mask to 252, 11111100. What I have observed is a rather dramatic change in the clouds. I pulled up some pics just to be sure. I changed some textures, changed airports, weather, seasons. There is no question that on my computer, the image generated with hyper-threading on is better, better than 2.4 with REX Essential. I was looking for a change in perhaps performance, which is quite good, not better looking weather. I don't have an explanation for it, wouldn't have predicted it, but it's definitely better. The clouds have a fuller appearance, more life like, and the popcorn unrealistic clouds now look like they should. I don't share every little improvement that I come upon but I thought that I would share this to see if anyone else could benefit from it.

Hi James, interesting.

The clouds may well look better when viewed from the outside but they look like a dog in the cockpit.

Arf, arf!
