HELP! FS2004 died...is there a max on...

Featured Replies

traffic and/or scenery files? I have been adding freeware sceneries, mesh, etc. for while now. Also I'm also up to about 600 traffic bgl files compiled with MRAI, etc. The other day I added one or two airlines, and I edited a AFCAD file for an airport. I left AFCAD running for a while, and the next time I launched FS2004, it got as far as redoing it's scenery files (as usual), then locked up, "Not Responding" and using about 50% CPU, but never got off the splash screen. I noticed that AFCAD had also stopped responding, killed it, and ever since FS2004 has continued to lock up at the same place.I removed the possible offending airport that I had been editing, same problem. Took some of the most recent traffic files back out, same problem. I backed everything up, reinstalled FS2004 over itself in the old directory, same problem. I'm in the process of reinstalling to another folder, and hopefully that will fix it, but some questions have occurred to me.Is there a max on the number/size/something of scenery files and traffic bgl files? Has anybody run into any other situation that could cause what I've described? Thanks for any input.Denny

I'm not sure about the number of files, but the hung-at-the-splash-screen problem can usually be fixed by simply reinstalling DirectX9c.Doug

AFCAD always stops responding during the configuration and scenery loads of FS. That's not unusual. An unsaved but heavily modified AFCAD file could create a mismatch in the scenery cache files and the real scenery files.FS2004 is much more sensative to mismatched files than other versions. One reason FS never edits the scenery.cfg - nor should users or install programs (They create a copy called NewScenery.cfg - and it replaces Scenery.cfg on the next restart.)Does AFCAD still work and find addon AFCAD files?Have you done a cold rebooYou might also try deleting all scenery.dat temporary cache files. FS2004 seems to have a lot of trouble with them. (There are other valid .DAT files - so only delete scenery.dat)

Thanks for the info, I bet that would have been it. I had rebooted several times without fixing it. Didn't try AFCAD again. I went ahead and reinstalled into a new folder now and it's back working (took me forever to transfer all my aircraft and scenery tho :-) ). But I'll know where to look next time, thanks again.Denny
