Ok, Can you tell me how to modify the SimConnect.ini to produce a text log that I can send?

 

I've been working on this for hours so I'm anxious to get it to you straight-away.

I saw the link above and read the document. I've tried a variety of combinations with the .ini . No matter what, it just does the same thing by opening the window on the desktop.

I tried this also:

o get a SimConnect LOG

Create a file containing these lines:

file_max_index=9where you need to replace the "path to FSX" by your particular path for the main FSX folder,
and save this file as Simconnect.ini in your "My Documents\Flight Simulator X files" folder (or, for a non-English Windows or non-English FSX, the folder where FSX stores and loads your saved Flights and Plans).

The Log will be found, after or even during your FSX session, in the FSX Modules folder. (You can of course set the path to somewhere more convenient).

With the options as shown you will get a file "SimConnect1.Log" first, then on the next FSX session "SimConnect2.Log" and so on, with it cycling to 0 after 9, overwriting previous copies.

If you run FSX in Windowed mode you can, if you wish, set "console=yes" to see a real-time display of what is going on.

I wasn't able to get a SimConnect Log but I was able to get a ASN Log that includes some SimConnect discussion:

Hi Les.

 

It seems fairly clear what is going on; ASN tries to connect to SimConnect and fails. Given that your other addon succeeds and therefore the SimConnect server must be up and accepting requests, I can only deduce that ASN is referring to a version of the client dll in the Winsxs folder that is incompatible with that installed with FSX. Since we seem to have established that you're running the latest MS version (by virtue of the fact that the addons like the object placement tool seem to be present in FSX) then ASN is either pointing to an older version or potentially a (P3D?) newer one.

 

I would expect the ASN setup program to either ask you to specify which version of FSX you are using or to work it out for itself. Whichever route it is taking, it is getting the wrong answer as evidenced by the log. I see 3 options:

1) Uninstall and reinstall ASN in the hope that the setup program will sort itself out.

2) Search out the ASN programs for references to SimConnect.dll. It may appear in a config file somewhere. If you go this route, report back your findings and we could try to manually repoint it. Since the reference could be encrypted or stored in the Windows registry, there's no guarantee this option will succeed.

3) Contact ASN support. You can be pretty confident that the problem lies with their code or how it has been installed/configured on your machine.

Thanks for the information. I should have mentioned earlier I also have the FS Economy client on a third PC t.hat fails to connect. I will try a fresh reinstall of ASN and FSE. Since I have reinstalled FSX twice in the last few days, I planned to revisit Win 7 permissions on the appropriate folders. 

 

I'm in Texas, so I think you are about 6 hours ahed.

Hi Les,

 

Never seen FSE before so I took a quick look at their website (www.fseconomy.net if anyone else is interested). Interesting concept. Presumably uses SimConnect to capture your aircraft data and pass it to other players. I'd expect it to trigger a connection and do some event mapping when its client application loads. I'd expect its installer to either find an existing SimConnect.dll or install a new one and reference it. If it uses an IPv4 connection to FSX (most likely) then it's going to want to know the FIXED IP ADDRESS of your FSX machine if it is not the local machine (which it should be able to reference on 127.0.0.1).

 

But back to the point in hand: I can't tell what is going on without seeing the SimConnect log output.

 

On your FSX machine, logged in as the user you normally use, open Windows Explorer and go to \Documents\Flight Simulator X Files

Copy the SimConnect.cfg you find there to SimConnect.cfg.old (or some such name, so you have a backup in case we want to see what the old one said at some point in the future).

Edit SimConnect.cfg by opening it in a text editor e.g. Notepad.

Remove everything from it and edit so that it just reads:

 

[simConnect]

level=verbose

console=1

file=C:\MySimConnect.log

 

...and save it.

Start FSX. Load up your addins. Now close FSX.

You should now find a file called MySimConnect.log in the root folder of your C: drive. Paste it's contents here or mail it to me and we'll see what is going on.

PS/ Just re-reading before adding, I'm wondering whether dynamic IP addressing may be the source of this issue. Let's dig further once we've taken a look at the log.

I sent the log to your email as I wasn't able to post it here. In FSE, you can fly solo or for a group with the object of earning funds by flying trips based on GA ops.

Hi Les,

 

Got the email and taken a long journey through the log file .

Here's what it shows (to me):

You're running SimConnect version 10.0.61259.0 - which I the same as I'm running (FSXA)

There's an error indicated which a little web searching says relates to use of Active Sky Next (ASN). Let me know if you are using this and you get an ASN error dialogue displayed when you start up.

"Elite FSX" successfully opens a connection to FSX and at some point seems to ask for duplicate data causing an exception.

Lots of successful data notifications are sent to Elite FSX.

 

However, no other exceptions show in the log and no other applications attempt to connect.

 

This doesn't seem to tally with your experience which makes me think:

1) Maybe the log doesn't relate to a period in time when the add ins you are having problems with are trying to connect or

2) Maybe the add ins are not trying to connect to this SimConnect server.

 

If the former then you just need to delete/rename the log file and run up FSX one more time along with every problematic add in. (And send me the new log)

If the latter, then I think we need to see the SimConnect.cfg file(s) from the machines running failing addins.

 

Shall we do both?

It probably won't do anything for other addons so refer to my previous post for further instructions.

I amended the exe.xml per your instructions. When starting FSX, the prompt asks to install:

 

as_btstrp.dll

 

After approving, nothing else occurs beyond the normal FSX start-up. . The 'Elite FSX' refers to the Elite King Air and MEL throttle quadrant drivers.As I understand it, the Elite driver by-passes FSUIPC but I don't know how it relates to SimConnect. I will send my latest SimConnect Log and SimConnect.cfg's from the two clients via email.

OK. Got the attachments.

That SimConnect log is totally different to the 1st.

It appears to show:

• The ASN config manager executable file loading
• FSUIPC library loading
• Elite library loading
• The active sky library loading
• Elite code setting up various event traps and maps to FSX events
• AS code doing the same
• FSUIPC setting up LOADS of data definitions and event traps
• Data flowing through to all the apps that have requested it

 

i.e. It looks very normal to me. No exceptions or failures showing in SimConnect. The SimConnect.cfg files seem fine and point to a machine on 192.168.1.4 which I assume is your FSX machine.

 

What do we have that now reports SimConnect not working? Any dialog box?

I went back to double and triple check files to make sure they are in the correct location, etc. After four days, I'm still at a complete loss. The most disappointing aspect is that SimConnect worked perfectly on this network for two and one half years before last week's Win 7 and FSX crash. I often use the System Restore function for these sorts of issues but the nature of the crash prevents me from going back as far as I need to go. I checked the diagnostic output and latest log but didn't notice anything remarkable.

Which would suggest human error. That's why I keep going back over and over again looking for one digit or character out of place or something in the incorrect location. It is maddening.
