September 21, 200520 yr makes sense. hey, thanks again for taking the time to answer my questions. take care, william
September 22, 200520 yr > by the way, let me throw this in. what are your thoughts on>using the map instead of the GPS when flying a jet in the sim.>it's almost the same as far as situational awareness and>doesn't clutter up the cockpit. the GPS doesn't look so bad in>GA aircraft but looks a bit out of place in the panel of jet,>in my opinion. i like the looks of some of those MFDs with the>moving maps already there, very clean looking. yea, i know>it's probably person preference but thought i'd ask.Check out this link for the Garmin 1000 glass panel system, that's now available in several GA airplanes & will be installed in the new Cessna business jet. Then see the next generation Boeing 787 panel in the next link. Be sure to see all four closeup pics. You'll notice that this new panel is much like the Garmin 1000 or Avidynes that are installed in Cessna's, Diamonds, Cirrus's, Pipers, Lancairs, and a few others. These are full moving map GPS's complete with terrain mapping, weather map overlays, and much more. Truth is, GA has often got a head start on the airlines. We had hand-held moving map GPS's before the airlines. We've now got Satellite weather on our GPS's that show weather patterns for hundreds of miles around our plane. This is much better than an airliners radar system for most purposes.http://www.garmin.com/products/g1000/http://www.ozarkva.net/forums/index.php?to...sg975;topicseenL.Adamsonedit: to change second link
September 22, 200520 yr I fear change and shall stick to my trusted and unreliable "steam gauges". :-hahIn all seriousness though, I prefer the old "steam guages". The glass cockpits just kinda ruin the mystique for me that made me persue my license.----------------------------------------------------------------John MorganReal World: KGEG, UND Aerospace Spokane Satillite, Private ASEL 141.2 hrs, 314 landings, 46 inst. apprs.Virtual: MSFS 2004"There is a feeling about an airport that no other piece of ground can have. September 22, 200520 yr i know what you mean. there was a special on TV awhile back about the cockpits of the future. they experimented in a 737 and the only nav instrument was a TV screen and a FLIR type pod with a TV camera in it projecting the enviroment around the aircraft to the screen. sounds like fun, huh? of course you already know that pilots of the future will be high school dropouts as not much schooling will be needed. the pay will be around $5.00 per hour or so depending on the amount of video gaming experience they have. can't wait! william
September 22, 200520 yr amazing! they look very much like the default GPS. guess i'll rethink my comment. thanks for the heads up. william
September 23, 200520 yr This is why I think I may take my commercial ticket to Alaska. September 23, 200520 yr Hi William,Good post. If you file with a "/G" then you must be able to go to an intersection. This is one of the biggest hassles in instrument flying- as one must be come very familiar with the GPS and be able to use it quickly and correctly.Too bad that FS doesn't let you choose what suffix you are filing with, when on the route page and selecting IFR. Maybe FS10??Bruce. ASEL, Instrument. KBJC, Colorado.

Recent experience with the Garmin 1000 & Avidyne, has now completely changed my mind! I've had aviation moving map GPS's since the invention, and these glass panels just do GPS all that much better.Pic: My steam panel & Garmin 296L.Adamson
