Steam Disk Write Error?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Not Flight Simulator related as I don't use FSX-SE, hence why I posted in this section, however I do use Steam for a few other games. Over the weekend I needed to reinstall one of my Steam games, so I removed all the local files and then began the download and install process. About 40% of the way through, Steam paused the download. I went into the Manage Downloads screen, and it had said 'Download Paused, Disk Write Error'. I thought this was strange. When I clicked the resume button, it just resumed and completed fine. Checking the log file for Steam, there is a line which says something along the lines of 'failed to write chunk in file' (file not found) (disk write error) and lists a filename which is just one of the game's wav sound files. Checking the game directory after the download completed, the file is there, and I also ran a verification of the local files through Steam and it verified successfully.

Thinking this was just a glitch, I tried installing another game - same error about midway through the download. However when clicking resume it just carried on.

Reading around the issue on Google it suggests bad sectors or a failing hard drive, so I ran SMART tests and a full 5 hour disk check (it's a 2TB hard drive, only FSX is installed on my SSD!) of the sectors using both the Windows chkdsk tool as well as my Western Digital Data Lifeguard software, and it passed with no errors. To go with this I have had no other symptoms of a failing disk with this drive before, so I doubt that there is actually anything wrong with my hard drive.

Has anyone else had this error in Steam?

Can't say that I have. Must be something on their end.
