January 28, 201610 yr Hi folks, I’m a long time simmer who has been out of the scene for at least five years and looking to get back in. I have owned many versions of Flight sim going all the way back to FS98 up to FSX. I am just now reading up on Prepar3d and of course FSX-SE. I own quite a bit of FSX add-ons so switching Flight Sims would make those obsolete, so I will hold off on Prepar3D for now. I just built a new rig with the following specs in order to restart where I left off. Windows 10 64 Bit Intel Core I7 6700K 4.0GHz (Overclocked to 4.6GHz) Gigabyte G1 Gaming GA-Z170X-Gaming 7 motherboard G.SKILL TridentZ Series 16GB 3400 DDR4 SDRAM GeForce GTX 980 Samsung 500GB SSD Corsair H110iGTX liquid cooling. The questions I have are: Is there a noticeable difference in going with FSX-SE over my FSX deluxe edition? Will most of my add-ons work in the Steam edition or do I have to hunt down and re-download updates? What are the must have add-ons for scenery, airplanes and environment I should look into? My preferred airplanes are airliners and I mostly sim in the Flight levels so pretty scenery except for the detailed airports I fly into are not too high on my must have list to start. I would appreciate any and all input. Thanks in advance. bash
January 28, 201610 yr What add ons are you wanting to use? FSX:SE is improved over FSX because certain improvements were made, albeit minor ones. Dovetail was not allowed to alter the code like LM but the difference is significant for some. Certain add ons won't work in FSX:SE. The Reality XP gauges and various other things. You have to look at the forums are find out what is compatible. A list exists and some things work despite not being officially supported. The PMDG MD11 is one that works fine is FSX:SE but it's not supported. Then if you're running Windows 10 that's another issue too. - Chris Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Elite AX | Intel Core i9 13900KF | Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4090 24 GB | 64GB DDR5 SDRAM | Corsair H100i Elite 240mm Liquid Cooling | 1TB & 2TB Samsung Gen 4 SSD | 1000 Watt Gold PSU | Windows 11 Pro | Thrustmaster Boeing Yoke | Thrustmaster TCA Captain X Airbus | Asus ROG 38" 4k IPS Monitor (PG38UQ) Asus Maximus VII Hero motherboard | Intel i7 4790k CPU | MSI GTX 970 4 GB video card | Corsair DDR3 2133 32GB SDRAM | Corsair H50 water cooler | Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD (2) | EVGA 1000 watt PSU - Retired
January 28, 201610 yr I haven't had any issues with fs2004 scene installed on fsx.steam, but aircraft.cfg files are very different. So look for fsx specific aircraft. So far, with all the environment textures I've loaded, nothing made more of an impact on looks as scenery tech landclass. Worth it.

I was looking to load REX and some detailed airports like EGLL etc and go from there. I was very impressed with the performance i got doing touch and goes in the Cessna 172 last night that I want to go full steam ahead and see what will bring my system to its knees and adjust from there. Frame rates set to unlimited were in the 350 FPS level flying at KFRG. I don't remember it being that high on my previous installation, granted I did not crank up autogen or move sliders that much to the right yet.
