Possible to replace i7-3770k CPU for something new?

I want to update my current system which is an i7-3770k with GTX 680.

 

Is it possible for me to replace the cpu only for something new, as long as the new CPU will fit on my motherboard?

 

If this is possible, I rather go this route than building an entirely new PC from scratch. What CPU can you guys recommend that's good that will replace my i7-3770k and will be able to do a direct swap?

 

I was looking at the i7-6700k, but will I see a big increase in performance by going with this CPU? Or is there a better CPU that I'm unaware of.
