August 20, 20169 yr Author Did you ever fly into Zweibrucken (EDRZ) No, never went there, although flew over it many times, it was more or less on the approach to runway 27 at Saarbrucken. Saarbrucken was the airport of choice as almost all the flights were Ford motor company charters for their factory at Saarlouis not far away. Most motor manufacturers operate on a "just in time" supply of components rather than have millions tied up in stock sitting in warehouses. If for any reason there's a hiccup in the supply chain, there's a risk that the production line might be shut down for want of a 20 cent grommet! The freight companies loved that system, most of their aircraft were idle during the day - getting a call from Ford for an emergency transfer of grommets to Saarbrucken was money in the bank for them. I enjoyed them too, 90% of my flying was in the dark, so it was nice to see a bit of countryside in daylight, especially over the beautiful parts of Germany, and the best part was, no waiting around for a return load, unload - and go home - the best sort of flying!
