Speed Control and FLC.

Featured Replies

Hi can someone just run through this please.

There is a SPD option on the AP but its doesn't seem to work.

As for FLC i still do not fully understand, iam i right in thinking that you select say you in the are at 10000ft 250knts, and you want to climb to FL280, You select FL280 on the auto pilot and select FLC and it will climb at 250knots?  How do you change / increase the speed in FLC mode?

Can some please right the order in which to operate the modes.

Thank You.,

The way FLC seems to work for me is this.  It is just another way of looking at climb and descent rates.  Selecting 250KTS will result in whatever pitch attitude will hold 250KTS.  If you are at a relatively low altitude and a relatively high power setting, the plane will pitch up to maintain the 250KTS.  If you are at a relatively high altitude and a relatively low power setting, the plane will pitch down to maintain 250KTS.  I think of it like VS mode, only instead of FPM of climb or descent, you are adjusting the climb or descent to maintain the selected speed.

In the case you proposed, 10000ft and 250KTS and steady at a constant power setting, selecting FL280 and FLC set at 250KTS will do nothing unless you increase power such that the airplane can sustain a climb at 250KTS.  The more power you add, the higher climb rate you will get.  But the airspeed should stay at 250, regardless.  Essentially, FLC Mode turns your throttles into vertical speed controllers.  To go up, push throttles forward.  To go down, pull throttles back.

Hi Whamil77, Thanks,

That makes sense, i was at 10000ft, 250kts, stuck in the ALT FL280 in and hit FLC thinking it would automatically increase power to accomplish both the 250kts and FLC.

I guess i as thinking it had a autothrottle.

What does the SPD button do on the Autopilot?  Does It hold it at say 250kts using pitch and not throttle, i have to set the throttle to the right sort of area and then the aircraft will hold it using Pitch.

Cheers Neil
