Glidescope & localiser problems

Featured Replies

Having been flying instrumental landings since Flight Simulator 2002 came out, I do feel that I've more or less got the hang of it. Even so, I still sometimes have the same old problem of the jet capturing the glideslope OK, but then descending too fast and too short, so that unless I disengage the autopilot far earlier than I normally would, the plane would touch down a kilometre or so before the threshold.Does anybody else have this problem? It's very difficult for me to work out the cause, I haven't been able to decide whether it is a fault in certain aircraft for example, or at certain airports. (Or is it really me?). I have flaps and airspeed pretty much as they should be......Suggestions welcome. Thanks!Martin

The only time I've had this happen is when I don't have quite enough speed for the APR hold's liking. Even though my speed is on the numbers for the aircraft, certain aspects of the aircraft's flight model can be ever so slightly off. In that case I usually compensate by increasing the approach speed in five kt increments--usually be setting IAS hold and watching where the numbers settle. I then use that thrust setting in all subsequent approaches. Also, always try an aircraft at an alternate airport, on the outside chance that the airport's ILS may have odd numbers in the database. Last, make sure the wind isn't throwing your groundspeed off as that can cause APR hold fits as well if you are behind in the power curve.-John

The easiest test for misplaced ILSs is whether or not the needles stay centered through the whole thing. If it indicates he's dropping below the glideslope when it does that, I'd say it's not the ILS.If Microsoft allowed for false glideslopes like in reality, though I doubt they did, then it could be that he caught a flase glideslope.----------------------------------------------------------------John MorganReal World: KGEG, UND Aerospace Spokane Satillite, Private ASEL 141.2 hrs, 314 landings, 46 inst. apprs.Virtual: MSFS 2004"There is a feeling about an airport that no other piece of ground can have. Coming down at a higher than normal speed, with less flaps than normal too, helps alot!! ("As real as it gets??).M. :-)

Never come across this before - will certainly try it. Thanks for the tip..Martin
