December 10, 200520 yr I saw that episode the other week, not really a proper plane, but definately some kind of flying machine heheIt was really impressive to see how they made it too :-) Alaister Kay
December 10, 200520 yr The silly thing got about two feet off the ground. LAME. I'm sorry, I really don't like that show. Every time I watch they're taking one perfectly good machine and hacking it apart to make it do something it wasn't designed for in a half-assed way for no good reason. Gimme Mythbusters any day.
December 11, 200520 yr Author in order to get around an FAA airworthyness certification, he was not allowed to leave ground effect. In the Popular Mechanics article it was quite an eye opener as to the extent and scope of the government requirments. They estimated that in order for it to actually be allowed to operate beyond the runway and above a calculated ground effect zone (44" for this wing shape), it would take about 50 months and between $166,000 and $178,000 in fees alone.they days of the backyard flyer are long dead, thus we will never see a 'plane in every garage'.
