December 11, 200520 yr I just went though couple of tests with textures. 32bit and DXT3. I noticed that if the texture contains alpha channel, textures become ugly jagged non-anti-aliased edges. Ruins the looks of the whole aircraft.I then installed DXT3 textures, without alpha, and it all looked darn smooth. And I know alpha channels are for reflectivity... So I checked that, and everything looked the same.I was testing with Iberia texture for PMDG 747. One was DXT3 non alpha, other was 32bit alpha. Although the alpha channel, when edited was almost totally white, so maybe that is the problem. The darker the alpha, the more reflectivity, am I right on this one?Anyway, what's the deal with alpha channels when it can't be antialiased? Or can it be? I have Radeon X850XT which also has latest Catalyst driver with enabled 6x AA, 16x AS and Quality Adaptive AA. So basically, that should yield the best quality possible.Last question basically, is it possible to antialias Alpha Channel?
December 11, 200520 yr You are correct. Denser alpha channel (so closer to black) means higher reflectivity. So a completely white alpha would be non-reflective, completely black would be a mirror.Your jaggedness running 32 bit textures most likely comes from the higher load they put on your video hardware, thus possibly leading to rendering compromises to still produce enough performance.
December 11, 200520 yr Jeroen,Thanks for your reply, though, that's not it. I just tested with all my settings down, ans still jagged edges appear. They only go away if I remove alpha channel.
December 11, 200520 yr Be sure that your alpha channel is pure 8 bit color...that helps to minimize the "pixelization" that can occur in DXT3 bmps.
December 11, 200520 yr Word Not Allowed, alpha channels are used for reflectivity only on aircraft (it's enabled in the MDL, same as specular shine) and for transparency in scenery textures and clouds, just an FYI.Regards, MichaelKDFWhttp://www.calvirair.com/mcpics/mcdcvabanner.jpgCalVirAir International Best, Michael KDFW
December 11, 200520 yr Well, another question. Now I tried processing some textures with following settings:32bitMipMapsAnd came with pretty good results. Although textures look little more blurred than usual, not as pixel sharp, but still far better than not antialiased. There a reason for this???I'll try that with 8bit alpha channel. How do I change that anyway?EDIT: NM, found out. Photoshop is cool :)
