Old and new scenery technologies?

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm a fairly new FSX user.

I bought Pro version (boxed) years ago along with Acceleration Pack, and they have been catching dust on a shelf until recent times, when:

1) I've finally found spare time to install them, and

2) The available hardware has evolved enough to make them usable.

As for add-ons, however, I'm under the impression that there is a huge difference between those released until 2013 or so, and those others released since.

I know of incredibly complex, relatively new sceneries, whose performance (fps) easily double that of older ones which are much more simplistic. That suggests a change in the scenery technology at some point in time, around 2013 I'd say.

Am I right?

Any comments highly appreciated...

and there are other sceneries released recently which go the other way and greatly reduce the FPS. Technology may have changed, but the people who create the scenery may not be as good when it comes to coding FPS-friendly, good looking add-ons.

FSX Steam Edition was released in 2014 which may have help create a change in scenery technology, but that's just speculation on my part.
