Best Freeware registry cleaner?

Featured Replies

Hello All, Is there a really great working 'freeware' registry cleaner which will work with FS9? In reading another thread I was wondering if my FS performance could be increased by a reg cleaner? Thanks in AdvanceClayhttp://www.dreamfleet2000.com/gfx/images/F...ers/Dopke01.jpgClayton T. While your overall system performance may be improved by cleaning the registry, cleaning the registry won't have any FS9 specific effects--at least none that can be measured. The biggest FS9 performance impacts: the FS9 settings themselves, the graphics card settings, running background programs (especially minimizing or reducing the number that are running), and defragging your drive. Cleaning the registry would be quite low on the performance scale with FS9 and as I already said, probably won't produce any measurable improvement in the sim's performance.-JohnEdit--I should note that the performance impacts I note above are common to all systems. Obviously hardware itself has an impact, but that's for another forum :)

There is no performance gain by doing a reg cleaning...in fact most people, plus forums such as ArsTechnica for example, recommend not cleaning your reg as it has no effect on performance and does more harm than good.

Bull. Cleaning the registry is not only good practice, but its vital to maintaining speed in XP. Recommend a tool called EzCleaner. Which is free, but has recently become donationware.Eric

I use a registry cleaner to remove stuff left behind by installs and other system changes. As has been noted, cleaning the registry is not likely to have any effect on FS9, but it can help your Windows system work better. I would not trust any freeware or shareware registry cleaner, as they can do signficant damage if they are too aggressive. The best I have found - and well reviewed in the computer rags - is part of the Fixit Professional V6 product that I use now. If you check online stores and look for deals, you can get it for about $25, which is reasonable. The Norton Utilities also have a Registry cleaner which is safe, but less aggressive than the Fixit product.

Thanks All, I picked up a Registry cleaner from www.softwareonline.com, with a total money back warranty. I documented the speed of the computer on an average and FS on the average and then used the reg cleaner, and afterwards defraged, as I always do -- the defrag once per day. From my best estimate, I picked up about 10% on the PC and 1-2 FPS on FS, which is running faster and smoother since doing so. I won't make any wildassed claims, but FS sure seems to run smoother, so I'm happy. Thanks for everyone's assistance.Best,Clayhttp://www.dreamfleet2000.com/gfx/images/F...ers/Dopke01.jpgClayton T.
