runway texture corruption - can anyone reproduce this?

Featured Replies

Go to Bozeman, Montana (KBZN). Line up on runway 12. The aircraft you use doesn't matter. Get in a position where you can see the runway close to or under the aircraft -- either hit the W key to get rid of the 2D panel, or pan the VC left a little so you're looking diagonally forward and left. Now apply power, and accelerate to 50 knots or so, but don't take off. Now stop, do a 180 degree turn, and do the same thing on runway 30. Does anything strange appear?I'm getting this corruption on a fresh installation, no add-ons of any kind. This is the only airport I've seen it, although I haven't flown that much lately. I can also get the corruption to show up on a stationary plane by going to spot view and panning around the plane.

I get the same problem in Bozeman--I actually set up my default flight there sometime back because it's a great area for GA flying. In fact, if a GA aircraft is low to the ground, such as a Piper, the runway will flicker in and out of view. I haven't tried it yet, but I believe the problem may be solvable with a flatten switch around the airport perimeter. A flatten switch is added to the scenery.cfg and looks like this (the first number is the field elevation, the followin numbers are the four corners of the "box" surrounding the airport. This example is a flatten I used to fix a problem in Canada in FS2002:-JohnFlatten.0=4583.0,N51 12.76,W115 32.35,N51 12.53,W115 31.37,N51 11.43,W115 31.98,N51 11.54,W115 33.12

Here's an updated flatten switch that seems to solve the problem for Bozeman. Note that it goes into the scenery.cfg directly under the lines for the Western North America entry:Flatten.0=4474,N45 47.84,W111 11.10,N45 47.84,W111 7.51,N45 45.66,W111 7.51,N45 45.66,W111 11.10-John

OK, thanks a lot John. I'll give it a try tonight.

That flatten switch cures the problem on my system. Appreciate the help, John.

It appears that the default flatten is at 1363.680 m while the airport is at 1363.675 m (4474 ft). Note that this works because it just so happens western north america has a higher priority in a default install than the default flatten (in namc) so the flatten switch gets used instead. The real problem is that flattens use units with fractions of x/128 of a meter. In the default file it is 87/128 = .680. I don't know how the flatten switch gets used, but it appears that it might cause a flatten altitude of 86/128 = .672, which is lower than the airport scenery hence the airport scenery will not flash with this fix.scott s..

Hi,Not sure if I am having a similar problem, but I seem to be having this problem at my FlyTampa KSEA.Doesn't matter what aircraft I'm in, if I position myself on the runway, everything is fine. I takeoff, complete 1 circuit, and just before I touchdown, maybe from about 50 to 100 feet, the runway starts to dissapear.I have other FlyTampa products, and also other addon airports, and this problem doesn't happen anyware else.I have been meaning to try reinstall this scenery, just not had the time. Just wondered if this could also be a flatten problem?Cheers,

I grew up at KBZN and, indeed, it is a great place to fly! Let me tell you, if you're using the 38m mesh from Justin Tyme the view is dead on.... first time I saw that familiar 'saddle' in the mountain it brought back so many memories....Unfortunately MS got the airport layout totally wrong. I am planning or doing a relatively detailed scenery of it as soon as I finish my current project. I'd like to put in a request here that if anyone has or can get pics of the field I would be very grateful (there've been a lot of changes since I was there). And sorry for the highjack, but glad you're enjoying "my" airport!! :)cheers.RJ

"And sorry for the highjack, but glad you're enjoying "my" airport!!"My last flight out of Bozeman, in '98, wasn't so enjoyable, but it was hardly the airport's fault. Getting ready to pull away from the gate, the engine start on our 737 began, followed by a large "bang". Something blew in one of the engines. We were all hauled out of there on a CRJ-200, which I hate with a passion. They put the windows a tad too low in the '200 (later fixed in the 700 and 900). For a tall man like myself, combined with my being unusually tall from the waist up, flying in that 200 was akin to getting an MRI in terms of "claustrophobia".So when I think of Bozeman, I indirectly think of MRI's vs. the CRJ 200 experience :) But I also remember it as one of the nicest airports I've flown through with Big Sky scenery that can't be beat!-John

I grew up in Bozeman, and got my PPL there waaay back in '76. My first solo CC was from BZN to Helena, which is a beautiful flight, following the Missouri River most of the way. I moved to the Salt Lake area in 1980, and have flown a number of GA aircraft from SLC to Bozeman over the years. That is also a wonderful flight. The Tetons are visible to the east for quite a while, then the last part of the flight follows the Gallatin River north.Unfortunately, as many times as I've landed at BZN, both as PIC and as a passenger, I don't have any photos.
