This feature seems to be improved. I encountered a line of thunderstorms on departure SSW of KMSP and I requested vectors. The ATC guided me around the line nicely.

Very cool - that was one of the things I always disliked about default ATC.  If I tried to go around a storm, they just told me to get back on course!
