GA IFR flights in the New York City area?

Featured Replies

I'm wondering if anyone with knowledge on the New York City area might be able to lay out airports that could be flown as a round robin for GA aircraft- particularly for instrument approaches. If the airports were within say- 40 miles- of each other, that would be good, but not including KJFK, KLGA or KEWR, where GA aircraft would not realistically fly into.I've enjoyed simulated flights into some SoCal airports other than KLAX, such as KSNA, KSMO, KLGB and KONT. I have a little knowledge of the SoCal area airports, but none of the New York City area, unfortunately. Thanks, Bruce.

You could try KTEB (Teterboro Airport, NJ), KHPN (Westchester County Airport), KFRG (Republic Airport, Long Island), KISP (Islip McArthur Airport, Long Island). All have instrument approaches, and are popular for both GA and corporate aircraft.Best regards,WayneMetro One / NMH01Metro Helicopters VAwww.metrohelo.org

KISP - KHWV - KFOK - KHTO - KBDR - KFRG - KISPThese airports represent all the major approaches (ILS, VOR, NDB, GPS) I haven't seen a back course at these airports, however.Atlantic City has PAR I think, but that's not modeled in FS2004. There are some airports in CT that have LDA and SDF approaches. Also KMMU, KMGJ and Westchester all have multiple approaches of various types and are very useful for training purposes.

I fly IFR out of Caldwell (CDW) & Morristown (MMU) airports, and for practice will typically go to Stewart (SWF), Trenton (TTN), or Allentown (ABE). Reading (RDG) is nice too if you want a bit of a further trip (around 70nm). A good place to "bounce" back and forth at is between Trenton & Northeast Philly (PNE). Controllers there are very accomodating when things aren't too busy, and I can usually get in three approaches (one at Trenton, one at NE Philly, and one back home at CDW or MMU) within about 1.5 hours of flying time. Great bargain for the money. :)--Guy
